About the Author
Huston Cummings Smith born on May 31, 1919 in China where his parents were Methodist Religious Missionaries. He spent the first 17 years of his life in China. Upon reaching the United States to continue his eduction at Central Methodist College, he soon drifted away and took up other religions. He even experimented with drugs, meeting Timothy Leary in the process. I first met him in Berkeley while I was a student at the University of California at Berkeley. Ofter the course of many years, Huston Smith traveled widely especially to India and tried just about every major religion and most of the minor ones, including even drug based religions of the American Indians based on peyote. Most of his early life was spent in the various branches of Hinduism, studying under different swamis. All this made him an expert in just about every religion. A TV station that evolved into the Public Broadcasting System asked him to give a television series on the world's religions. His director reminded him repeatedly to keep his lectures exciting and attention grabbing. “This is not a classroom where you have a captive audience”, he said. “If you lose their attention for thirty seconds they will switch channels and you won't get them back. So, make your points if you must – you're a professor so you have to make your points. But illustrate them immediately, with an example, something that will connect them to things your audience can relate to.” Huston Smith believed that this is the key to this book's success. There are other, perhaps technically better, books out there, but none have enjoyed the wide spread popularity of this book.

Brilliant synopsis of the best of the world's religions

Mr. Smith extracts from the world's great religions - Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity - that which is ideal. He intentionally does not delve into the minutiae of religious history or the many ways in which religion has been used as a vehicle for evil. As he explains, "The empowering theological and metaphysical truths of the world's religions are . . . inspired. Institutions - religious institutions emphatically included - are another story. . . ."

The book thus sets forth in careful, clear prose and clever detail the very best of seven influential world religions - their core beliefs, their inherent beauty. Mr. Smith is a genius with an analogy, and unfamiliar, or arguably bizarre, religious abstractions are summed up and made concrete in the stroke of a pen. Take, for example, the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. "It holds that while God is fully one, God is also three. The latter half of this claim leads Jews and Muslims to wonder if Christians are truly monotheists, but Christians are confident that they are. As water, ice, and steam, H2O ssumes states that are liquid, solid, and gaseous while retaining its chemical identity."

This brilliant book is a "must read" for everyone, of every religious persuasion. The respect it instills for diverse religious beliefs, and the manner in which the reader slowly comes to realize how much seemingly incompatable religious systems have in common, is nothing less than profound.

Wonderful read, but hard to understand

This is the text book used at the high school I currently attend for the World Religion class. It is much too complex for the average high school junior so I don't know why the school chose it. I however found the book to be a remarkable literary masterpiece. It uses vivid language and broad ideas to portray many of the worlds great religions. It does not give a full detail of all the religions but only a general description and some highlight of dogma. The author limits the book to the main sect of each religion and does not go into small segregations (i.e. Christianity not Baptist). This 17 y/o high school junior believes that this book is a must read for any person looking for a faith to fit your beliefs or just anyone curious about the beliefs of other people in the world.

Good to know about the good side and wisdom of religions.

Being at a stage of agnosticism, I found myself curious and needing to know more about all the religions, and decided to try Houston Smith's "The World's Religions". Smith includes the world's predominant faiths: Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity and the native traditions several continents. If this is your first contact with many of these religions, you will for sure feel lost. Even in the engaging way Smith writes, there is just too much information that is left out, and I often found myself wondering about certain subjects that were mentioned but not explained. My main problem with this book was perhaps the lack of more historical facts, a clear exposure of the main differences between religions, and a better index, which is essential not only for reference but also for people who are having their first contact with religion (For instance, Torah, now what's that anyway? Hmm, no, it's not in the index...hmm).
Not even Smith's summaries at the end of each chapter will leave you with the feeling you finally understand it all, and I wouldn't mind having some graphics clarifying things out a bit better instead of having to take notes all the time - A broader view on the subject. I am perhaps spoiled with my engineering degree in college where complex matters are usually explained with the help of some diagrams, so some people might not miss this aspect.
But don't get me wrong. This book does deliver most of what it promises, and attempts to cover extremely complex matters of heart that are simply impossible to fully present in a book, much of it you will have to feel, not read. It is poor on history, but it's not supposed to have much more on that field (I would prefer a bit more), and also, what might annoy some people is that it is not a balanced account of its subject. You will only get to know about values, attention will be given only to the good parts. If you want a balanced account on religions, including fanaticism, persecution, and those sides that are more of a curse than a blessing, but still are part of it, you will have to find another book. If you want to learn about the main values, (many of which they all share) it's here, but keep in mind that you are not seeing the dark side of the moon.
My objective was precisely learning about the values of each religion, and how they compare to each other. (This book is better with the first problem than with the second). Smith apparently did not want to go too deep into the comparative religions waters, as comparisons probably always end up comparing their worth and are sometimes odious. The price for not showing one religion as superior to others is that you will not get comparisons, or you will get very little of it.
Finally, the differences are sometimes minimal, but sometimes huge. Smith explains most of it clearly, and if you are ready to look at those religions through other's eyes you will understand it better. I found interesting the thoughts on how religions are all basically alike
This book was somewhat of a failure to me, but I guess that it is ultimately impossible to find a book on this issue that will please me or give me the fully clear knowledge I would like, as it is very hard to understand religions, and even more when they are not our own (no matter if you are theist, atheist or agnostic).
Lacking more history, and a clearer explanation of the institutional dimensions of those religions, along with some other subjects, it is still a great book and most of all a good intro to the wisdom those religions share. You will probably find yourself wanting more information, but Houston Smith's work is a good place to start.
Overall, you might end up still a bit confused, but you can still benefit from the wisdom Smith managed to gather in those few pages. I recommend it, it's worth your money.

Another Great Book

I loved this book from cover to cover. A really informative and helpful book in so many ways. Even after I finished reading the book, I've already used gone back to reread certain sections a good amount of times to refresh my memory on helpful tips and techniques.

This book goes into many different topics around the idea of working with animal parts for both or either spiritual and/or artistic reasons. The author spends time to go over many of the ethical concerns about such work as well as going over the very important legal aspects as well. The author, Lupa, also gives fair warning about differing legalities of certain kinds of animal parts and remains in certain states and countries as well as time periods. The author also gives certain alternative ideas for readers who do not want to work with fur or bones of the once living or remains of the animal they wish to work with can not be obtained by means that follow their own ethics or the laws of where they live.

The author also nicely goes over how to handle and work with what remains on the animal parts themselves, the `spin spirits.' This material, while it was somewhat touched upon in her earlier work Fang and Fur, Blood and Bone, it is refreshing to see such a topic be expanded upon even more.

Lupa's section on how to make and work with certain animal remains from fur to bones was again very helpful on dealing with the physical aspect of working with remains. She goes over ways to make certain tools and items from headdresses to wall hangings and from dancing skins to rattles and then some.

I warmly recommend this book, and on that note her other works on this subject as well. If this author continues write about this subject of totems, skin spirits, and so on I'll certainly have to pick up a copy of my own.

A great follow up to Fang and Fur

This is a very practical book on how to work with animal parts. In that its the perfect follow up to Fang fur blood and bone. If you would like to work with furs and need instructions on crafts and uses of furs, leather and bone, this is the book for you.
The discussions the modern and historical uses of animal parts is pretty good and she does give a whole chapter skin dancing. If you don't feel like you need hand holding on the craft component of working with critter parts, she also gives the best how to care for your critter parts that I've ever read.
The highlight of the book is her second afterword where she gives you a glimpse into the deep relationship she has with one of her dancing furs. This book has all the accessibility as her first book and makes a really nice addendum to fur and fang. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that I would have liked to hear more of her personal stories about her work with the critters.

Another Great Book by the Author

Skin Spirits is about working with animal spirits inside of furs, skins, skulls, bones, and other remains of animals. The way it reads is very practical and full of the authors experiences of how she works with skin spirits in her own practice.

The book provided me with a lot of understanding of working with animal spirits in skins and sort of validated some thoughts that I had when I started to work with one of my own skins (a fox tail). These spirits are their own, sort of what is left over after the animal dies, not the soul but a portion of who and what the animal was remains there in the physical part, which would normally just rot away and dissipate over time if left to the weather and other natural forces of decomposition.

I feel that this book gave me the means to understand where I am going in my own work with animal spirits and even gave some references as to where to buy certain skins, bones, etc. She also covers over legal laws of possessing certain animal remains and how we need to be aware of these laws, even if we do not like them. The book also gives some interesting ideas about the subject of working with furs and skins as well as providing some look into the authors work with them through pictures and a sort of step by step design in creation. As always, I believe that she has done her homework in providing a great book for those who wish to pursue this path. I think it is worth having in your library if you are getting into the practice of animal magic and working with skins, taxidermy, etc. It’s a great book for understanding spiritual animals as well as their physical remains.

At last: The secret to being creative AND sucessful

This succinct and beautifully written book clearly conveys what whole armies of consultants and self-help gurus have tried in vain for years to teach. You will learn something just by reading the table of contents; what Enns calls The Twelve Proclamations. I have spent 30+ years practicing the alchemy of matching the gifts and talents of creative people with clients who so desperately need them. During that time I have witnessed and even encouraged the growing tendency of creative firms to give away their best work for free to win new commissions. I knew there must be an alternative. Surely this strategy of mutually assured destruction could be replaced with something better. Never, until now, have I seen the secret shared so thoughtfully and so well in this (literally) little black book.

The message here is for all creative businesses who want to move away from being "order-taker suppliers to expert advisers" and want to forge "a more satisfying and lucrative way of getting and doing business." The transformation begins with a willingness to focus and then articulate that focus through a consistent claim of expertise, working continuously "to add the missing skills, capabilities and processes necessary to support our new claim." Enns first audience is marketing communications firms, yet the fundamental truths and lucid examples he shares are completely applicable to the creative enterprises I am most familiar with, architecture and photography.

Enns is clear about the difficulty of beginning and sustaining the transformation, both personal and business, that is required to move from a commodity provider forced to give away their best thinking for free in order to win new work to to expert adviser whose cost of sales is essentially zero. His insight into the hearts and minds of creatives and the culture in which we are trained and have practiced for so long comes from first hand experience. Sadly, he observes that "not everyone has the heart or stomach for revolution."

The last proclamation, "We Will Hold Our Heads High", is written with the conviction of a prophet, calling to his people at a crossroad: "On the one side, the process of design is finally being seen as the last great differentiator of business and economics; while on the other, the outputs are increasingly seen as commodities". He invites we creatives to accept our unique mission: "We didn't choose our craft; it chose us. And we were never in this for the money. Like all creative people we only seek to create, and in doing so, somehow change the world." This manifesto provides the blueprint for building a sustainable business model that creatives of every type can implement to win the work they want, gain the respect they deserve, make a profit, and have more fun.

Expert Creatives Can Make Money Too

I have just finished reading (for the 2nd time) Blair Enns book. It needs reading all in one sitting and then a second time where you can pour over the concepts and teachings. This book is for Owners and Senior Managers of Creative Agencies who are seeking to stand apart from their competitors. It is about positioning your agency for success and one of the key learnings in it for me was the relationship you have with your clients, we are experts in our chosen field and the client is paying for that expertise. We have a duty to help the client choose their agency wisely and to help give them confidence to trust our expertise and for us to continually invest in ourselves and our businesses to ensure we are delivering true value for our clients.

Don't read this once and don't just read it and put it away. Refer to it regularly (especially when you are about to give something away for free or too cheaply). Get your team to read it and discuss it with them. The whole agency needs confidence in order to make break through changes.

At last a book that inspires and that seeks to help our industry be more professional and make money doing it.

A very big thank you to Blair for producing such a well structured and beautifully written book - and one that can be read in a few hours!

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Every creative-industry business owner should read this. Whether your company is a design studio, brand agency, marketing consultancy, or a production firm, you will re-think the entire way you sell after reading this book.

Many Examples and Details

Covers many variations of collectible framing from basic to using a combination of frames making a deeper or more complex design. Lots of technical details on making the frame work for all types of objects from clothing, to heavy and odd shaped objects. Good coverage on materials that are safe to for conserving the integrity of your items. Assumes very little and covers a lot, so the book can be used by the beginner and still provides a good deal of information for the more intermediate framer.

story of survival

Asylum brings to light the plight of thousands of women in the 19th century. A man could "get rid" of his wife by simply paying a physician $5 to sign papers sending her to an asylum for the insane where she would probably stay for the rest of her life. The conditions in many of he asylums were deplorable and the "patients" were often subjected to "treatments" that were little more than crude experiments. In this book a young woman arrives in the United States from Ireland to take a job in an asylum in West Virginia. Over the years she has many adventures that result in changed lives for herself as well as for many of the employees and inmates of the institution. It was a pleasure to read. The author has done a lot of research and presents a true picture of the plight of these women.

COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN!!

I hardly have time for pleasure reading but once I started this book I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. A VERY FAST read and holds your attention the entire time. Amazing details made the visuals of your mind SEE these characters as well as feel their emotions. The poetry is mind boggling that ALL THIS TALENT comes from only ONE author. I highly recommend this book and am in awe at the author's wide range of talent. This book far exceeded anything I could imagine it to be!!! Kudos Sherry Logsdon!!!
