I'll make this short and sweet: If you are taking a graduate level course and can't remember anything about the French Revolution, this book's for you. If you want an introductory level text with short chapters, plenty of subtopics divided into easy to handle sections, you'll like this book. It also has an extremely helpful timeline. If you already know a lot about the French Revolution, I doubt you'd find this book to be "exciting".

I had to read this little book for a European History elective focused entirely on the French Revolution, and boy was it helpful. Terse, but concise, it highlights the most important occurrences and events that transpired during the years before, during, and shortly after the Revolution. Great read if you're interested in the subject matter.

The ideas, questions, issues, and problems that we study in International Political Economy (IPE) are increasingly important. It is hard to make sense of a newspaper, a business investment, or a government policy without an understanding of the theories, institutions, and relationships found in IPE. It is difficult, in other words, to understand our everyday lives without some understanding of IPE, so deeply are we now touched by international relations and global events.

We believe that IPE is so important that all college students need to understand it in a fundamental way. Our conviction is that it is possible to present this material in simple ways that retain the complexity of the global issues and intellectual problems we address, but without making the discussion fit only for graduate students. Our aim is to provide educational materials that will allow "beginners" (college freshmen and sophomores) to go from 0 to 60 in IPE in a single semester. Our hope is that these students will get excited about IPE as an element of lifelong learning and become better citizens and more knowledgeable individuals in the process. OUTLINE OF THE BOOK

The book begins with flue chapters designed to set out some basic tools for studying IPE. Chapter 1 introduces the fundamental elements of IPE. We will begin with relatively simple tools and ideas, then add layers and detail to make IPE real. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 explore three ways of looking at IPE that have been powerful forces in history and remain influential in today's world: mercantilism, liberalism, and marxism or structuralism. Chapter 5 introduces four theories (rational choice, feminist, green, and postmodern) that challenge our understanding some IPE questions and events.

The second section of the text examines the web of relationships or structures that tie nations and their citizens together. As a student sitting at your desk, you are linked to people and places around the world in a number of ways which you need to understand if you are to make good personal, business, and social choices. Chapter 6 looks at production and international trade. Chapter 7 looks at the monetary linkages that bind us together. Chapters 8, 9, and 10 examine, respectively, the debt connections, the security structure, and the ties created by knowledge and technology.

At the end of the first ten chapters, then, you should be able to imagine yourself as part of the international political economy and how you are linked to states and markets around the globe. You should have a fundamental understanding of what these linkages are, and an appreciation of the theories and perspectives that interpret these structures and guide our understanding of them.

The second half of the book looks at specific topics and problems in IPE that are essential to a sound understanding of the world today. Chapters 11 to 14 look at issues and events that are usually associated with the industrial nations of the North. We examine the European Union, the controversy over NAFTA, the IPE of Japan, and the problems of the formerly Communist countries making the transition to another form of political economy.

Problems and issues generally associated with the less developed countries of the South are discussed in chapters 15 to 17. These chapters look at the dilemma of Less Developed Countries (LDCs) and Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs), the nature of the multinational corporation, and the IPE of OPEC and oil.

Finally, the last three chapters examine global problems. The global environment and the food crisis are discussed. The very last chapter asks, "Where do we go from here?" After reviewing basic concepts and examining the fundamental tensions that shape today's world, we consider four scenarios for the future of IPE.

At the University of Puget Sound, where we teach, all of our students take a course in IPE, or something similar, in their sophomore year. We have written this text to help our students and to help ourselves serve their needs. We hope you find it a valuable educational resource. WHAT'S NEW IN THE SECOND EDITION?

The world has changed a lot since the first edition of this textbook appeared in 1996 and the second edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect the dynamic environment of IPE. We have retained the basic format that has proved so successful: a survey of theoretical perspectives followed by an analysis of structural connections, leading to sections that explore state-market tensions, North-South relations, and global problems. Within this structure, each chapter has been carefully revised. A few chapters have received major overhauls; all of them have been updated. Here is a list of the most significant changes.

Chapter 1 has been revised to make it a more user-friendly introduction to IPE for beginners (but not, as the popular how-to book series has it, for "dummies"). The U.S.-China case study has been retained and deepened somewhat. The notion of Waltz's three levels of analysis is introduced in this chapter to provide a basis for discussion in later chapters. Chapter 5 has been broadened significantly. In place of a chapter on rational choice theory, Michael Veseth has written a new chapter that surveys four theories that, depending upon your viewpoint either challenge or enrich the traditional study of IPE: rational choice, feminist, green, and postmodern theories. We want this chapter to serve as a point of entry for professors who want their students to study one or all of these theoretical perspectives without fundamentally changing the format and focus of the book. Dave Balaam has written an entirely new chapter 9 on the global security structure, uprooting the discussion from the previous focus on the Cold War and asking students to consider security as a dynamic and many-layered problem. Chapter 13's analysis of state-market tensions in Japan has been thoroughly revised by Karl Fields and Michael Veseth to reflect more clearly the political and economic crises that Japan has confronted in the 1990s. The focus of this chapter is now the model of the developmental state and the question of whether this system of state-market relations is still valid. The analysis of the transition from state to market by former communist countries has been strengthened through a revision authored by Patrick O'Neil, our colleague at Puget Sound, who joins the textbook team in the second edition. Professor O'Neil's revision adds detailed substance to the basic outline established in the first edition. Chapter 17's discussion of the IPE of energy and oil has also come in for a major revision. The focus of the chapter is now clearly on oil and the recent issues in the IPE of oil. Much of the historical analysis of the first edition chapter has been cut to make room for more recent events. "Where do we go from here?" We have revised chapter 20 to make it less U.S.-centric and to address more directly the questions and concerns that students have when they reach the end of a textbook like this. All the chapters have been revised to take into account a number of important IPE events, especially the growing discussion of and concern about economic globalization, the financial crises in Asia and elsewhere, and the advent of a single currency in Europe, the euro. Unfortunately for those of us who teach International Political Economy to undergraduates on a regular basis, most text books on the subject are either better suited to a graduate-level course, or are still mired in the past. I am grateful to David Balaam and Michael Veseth for providing a fresh, up to date, approach. I particularly like the fact that they cover basic theory as well as the modern structures of the international system. Perhaps most important to me (because I expect my students to acutally read their text) is that their book can not only be understood by undergrads, it is far less likely to be used as a sleep aid that any of its competitors.

Understanding the way things work.

I read this book during my course of IPE while studying an MBA. These book will really help students, financial advisors, CEO's, politicians and everyone involved in International Management to make better analysis and take better decisions. Some time people believes in a conspiracy and take events like a isolated things, the fact is that everything is related and the three major perspectives of the world are in constant conflict everyday. �The three major perspectives? Yes: The liberals and the free trade perspective, the nationalists and the structuralism or modern socialist. It also covers the green perspective (oriented to take care of the environment) . Balaam makes a very clear analysis and he doesn't take sides so you will understand the way thinks happen and the media and politicians will not cheat on you to push you to "take sides on poll's". Enjoy.

The contents of this book are very practical, easy to understand and apply. Such an easy and interesting read! I have not been able to read any books other than baby books for months and months now (have a 4-month old) so it is definitely great for me to finally be interested in anything else. Seriously, I have bought 10 books and can't get into them!
And oh how I wish that this book was mandatory for everyone to read. It's all just so common sense but it seems that a lot of people don't have the common sense, and some things just need to be spelled out bluntly and clearly. It is helping me be a better boss, business owner, parent, wife and a friend.

Wendy Despain is a contract game designer, writer and teacher who has wide experience in games and viral media. Her credits include narrative designer on "Gardens of Time," named the Best Social Game of 2011 by GDC Online, and consultant on the design of Cartoon Network's successful MMO "Fusion Fall." Despain was also the lead designer andproducer on Alternative Reality Games (ARG's) for Gene Roddenbery's "Andromeda" and "Earth: Final Conflict," and served as writer and/or designer on a variety of children's games such as "Bratz: Forever Diamondz" and "Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks." An Excellent High-Level Survey of Game Design Principles

What Wendy Despain and her coauthors have managed here is a much needed survey of important design concerns and techniques. Rather than dive deep into dense paragraphs of jargon, the authors present quick high-level discussions of key design questions and principles, making them accessible and encouraging the reader to pick up, try out, and combine what they have read in generous, accessible fashion. Beautifully designed, the book presents a series of pleasantly illustrated two-page spreads that prevent the reader from being intimidated by a wall of text. This book makes an excellent introduction to the core principles of game design for a beginner, or a good inspiration for brainstorming by an experienced pro.

For an introduction or refresher to game design theory and concept, Wendy Despain's book is excellent. However, for the $59.99 price tag? There is not enough substance. Half the pages are simply "filler" illustrations which only serve to increase aesthetics and page count. The articles themselves are very short, simple and easy to read. They provide a great summation of important concepts that can then be more precisely researched. The examples used are very broad and cover tabletop and video games most people should be familiar with, but there is no real analysis of how specific design principles help/harm the success of various games, or any sort of look into how a group of design principles interplay in the classic games that are mentioned by name.

If the cover price for this book was $29.99, I would consider it a much better investment. Instead, I can only recommend getting the Kindle version, a used copy, or borrow a copy from your local public library. The actual content just doesn't justify the price tag otherwise. This is a soft-covered book of 100ish 1/2-1 page introductory articles fluffed up with pretty (but not very relevant) pictures.

The Cliff Notes of Game Design

I suspect I've dated myself with this review's title. (Do people use Cliff Notes anymore?) Still, the title is apt. This is a very usable, high-level guide of the main principles game designers use day to day. One page per principle provides a good level of granularity, resulting in a reference that will get more use than the other tomes that go deeper on each of the principles.

This book serves a wide range of design experience as well. Beginners can use it to survey the basics before diving into those deeper tomes. But it also appeals to the experienced designer. Even after 15 years of designing games, I can't always recall each of these principles at a moment's notice. Thankfully, I have this book to help with that now.

TJ Michaels was born into a musically eclectic family. She sings, even outside of the shower. She also loves to read. One Sexy Alpha Vampire not enough? How about TWO?

Seeker's Solace is the 4th book in T.J. Michael's Vampire Counsel of Ethics series. I did read the 1st book in this series Carinian's Seeker, but did not read book 2 or 3. I say with an uber sad face only because GAH Seeker's Solace was amazeballs!

I enjoyed so many aspects of Seeker's Solace. First off I want to say that the multi-cultural aspect adds the extra touch of realism that I think is missing in many paranormal romances. With a variety of physical descriptions It adds an extra dimension to every character. The fact that they were hunky and super alpha - well...that certainly added a layer I always enjoy. Vampire are not my favorite, but T.J. Michaels makes me want to switch teams. GO TEAM VAMPIRE!

The main protagonist, Jovon, is everything I love to see in a female character. Intelligent, strong, and self aware. I loved that Jovon accepted the opportunities she was given and that the story was not about her need to defy having a mate or maybe two? Heh heh. That's right you read it correctly - two. Two alphas. Two sexy vampires. Both could be hers. This book can make the pages melt and should come with a fan. It is smokin' and one of the sexiest books I have read this year.

The only reason this book is not getting a perfect rating is that I felt built up for a huge fight and didn't get it. I kinda wanted some ass kickin' and justice!!! I know. I am real hard ass for those 5/5!

If you are fan of super hot alphas and strong plot lines with plenty of heat...look no further! I highly recommend Seeker's Solace!

I rate Seeker's Solace 4.5 out of 5 Bullets!!

It's ok, but it could and will get better knowing TJ.

For her first menage, this wasn't a bad read. But as an avid reader of most thing MMF, I found it to be a bit lacking. Like, the attraction between the three was told at me instead of me experiencing it. Does that make sense?

I have been waiting for another Vampire chronicle and this story was definitely worth the wait! If you read please start from the beginning of the series, it's worth it!
