Incredible read.

First off I absolutely love this series. I won't give any plot spoilers. This book really opens up some more character development especially in characters you've wanted to know about. You get more insight to Setrakus Ra and what his whole deal is. And you get to see a different side to Ella. Definitely pick this up if you are a fan to the series or if you just enjoy an incredible sci fi voyage!

The best one Yet!

This book is now my favorite of the 5 released! It starts where the Fall of Five left off, Marina, Six and Nine are trekking through the swamp with Marina a mess from Five's betrayal and keeping little control over her new legacy. John is with Sam, Malcolm and Adam on the run after the events in Chicago, joined by the Chimaera Adam rescued. We also get the POV from Ella who was taken in Chicago. If you read The Lost Files: Hidden Enemy, there is a nice surprise (ok we knew this would play in) about where one of those story lines left off.

The action is intense throughout most of the book. There is no where near as much running and hiding as in the previous books. The Garde had united in The Fall of Five, so now it is about taking action instead of sitting around and planning. The pace is really fast, and moves along well. Some of the previous questions you're left wondering are answered. (DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU HAVENT READ FALL OF FIVE). Without giving away any details, but some answers to look forward too, we learn Setrakus Ra's story and how he came to lead the Mogs and why he wants Ella at his side from the coma Ella was stuck in. I love how the book ends. It's the perfect setup to the last book and I cannot wait another year to see how this sends! I guess I'll have to make do with the novellas that will be released.

A great series but flawed.

It's difficult to give a fair rating on this series. On the one hand, I love the concept and the whole series while on the other hand - as one other commentator notes here - the author's writing style drives me nuts at times. I am not American and there are numerous occasions when the street-speak or very American terminology throws me altogether. (For instance: "bangs" - I had to look that one up!) This leads me to comment that all the Garde speak in this style - even Marina and Ella who did not grow up in the USA. Teenagers don't lose their style of talking overnight when moving country - I know, I did this myself. In fact, they may never stop being more Spanish then American (as in the case of Marina and Ella.)
Having said all this, the series is enjoyable but again, there needs to be a clearly defined pathway through the five novels and nine novellas. Knowing the correct reading order is essential to understanding the back stories of characters and how they fit with the main novels - particularly when it comes to Adam and Five. Trying to read "The Revenge of Seven" without having first read "The Lost Files: Hidden Enemy" will lead to confusion for the reader. Reading the five main novels alone, is certainly not the path to take. In fact, Adam's appearance in the previous book "The Fall of Five" will seem mysterious without having read the first Lost Files novellas which tell of his relationship with Number One. It would be most helpful if Amazon or the publisher of the series could print the suggested reading order online so as to help newcomers to the series.

It was an interesting read, but not very helpful ...

It was an interesting read, but not very helpful. It doesn't so much teach anything about drawing as much as attack Disney and promote a few rather uninteresting artists. I'm all for alternatives to Disney style, but this was pretentious and not very helpful as an animation education text. If you are interested in animation and can get past the prattle, it is worth reading, just try and buy it on the cheap.

Awesome for the start

This is a good pickup for the introduction of the drawing required in animation that the set of AVA books has to offer. There are brief projects to try throughout the series, and more hints on approaching the career in obtaining a masterful grasp of the craft. The whole series is more about opening one's mind to a new way of thinking that is relevant to the field of animation. The series does provide a plentiful amount of gems that are not in any other books on the subject, and it also covers some reiterations, yet at times they are more reinterpretations. The picture qualities in all of these provide excellent sources to extrapolate inspiration and references.

Good, scholarly, but not definitive

Quite a good book, thanks to well-chosen illustrations and the insights of artists like Joanna Quinn and Nina Paley. Unfortunately, author Paul Wells makes you fight your way through sentences like: "When drawing provides the infrastructure of an approach there is always a relationship between the psychology of creative practice and its technical applications." This sort of writing works when it's the only way to express a complicated idea, but here it seems to be academese for its own sake. You end up having no idea whether Wells himself draws, which you'd think would be a prerequisite for writing a book on drawing. For more useful texts on the subject, see Don Graham's "Composing Pictures" and Walt Stanchfield's "Drawn to Life" volumes.

They arrive just in time to see Jake win the Downhill Derby in his little replica of the grandparents van. Of course, all the other competing vehicles are replicas of the cars, trucks, etc. that Gramps and Granny passed on their way. This is a delightful choice for preschoolers who adore cars and trucks of any kind. There are lots of details in the colorful illustrations for the child to search. Excellent information!

Bryan's books are small but packed with excellent, well presented information on caring for horses. As my farrier for the past many years, I can attest that he knows his stuff-- and presents it in a way that anyone can understand. I'm motivated to become more of a partner with my horses in caring for their hooves. Bryan has opened my eyes to the importance of shoeing the horse, not just the hoof (read the books and find out why), and I have never had a lame horse in the many years he's been helping them. Short of having him come to your barn, get the books!

After reading this quick overview of miniature horse hoof care I was able to communicate better with my farrier...the diagrams in the back of the book alone was worth the $9 I spent.

It really is a great book, but ...

I LOVE this book -- at least I love the idea of it. I've been wanting to keep some kind of journal/diary that my kids could read someday and learn about me ... this little book is perfect for that!

It asks a simple question each day for a year. There are 4 lines to answer the question, which is great for someone like me who tends to ramble -- the 4 lines ensure a short and sweet response. In front of the 4 lines is a bolded "20__" where you fill out the current year.

Basically, it's set up like a traditional 5-year diary. Each page has 5 groups of 4 lines beginning with 20__. So after you go through a year of answering the questions at the top of the page, you start over again on the second group of lines.

I think it's a great tool to see how you've grown and changed over the course of a year -- as well as how you've stayed the same. I'm excited to see how my answers will vary from year to year.

I know another reviewer gave a good sampling of the questions, so I'll just throw in a few here: "When was the last time you flew on an airplane?" "What's your favorite word (right now)?" and "Write down a problem you solved today."

Now for the reasons I only gave this book 3 stars, even though I love the idea of it:

1. It's tiny, about 6x4 inches. That makes it handy to carry around, but hard to manage when you're trying to hold the book open and write in a very small space.

2. It doesn't lay flat. That's a big pet peeve of mine, especially for a diary or journal. It makes the chore of writing in a tiny space even more of a chore. My first entry is all messy; it feels impossible to write neatly. I'm hoping to get used to it so my printing can be somewhat legible.

3. I was surprised that there's no ribbon to use as a bookmark. I had to use a sticky note page marker. With the style of this book -- gilded edges, hard cover -- the missing ribbon is confusing, as well as inconvenient.

I think 3.5 stars would be a more accurate rating. This would easily get 5 stars from me if it were a bit bigger, laid flat, and had a ribbon bookmark!

Tiny small stubby stout pocket-sized but beautiful little book

For some reason I thought this book would be much bigger - a normal-sized journal. I had intended to paste a Christmas card from the person who bought it for me on the inside cover. But I had to laugh at that idea when it arrived - it's a stout, stubby little book, would be pocket-sized if it weren't so thick, and this dramatically reduces the amount of space there is on the page to write. I already knew I'd have trouble fitting my thoughts into a few lines given a *regular* size page, but with these miniature pages it's going to be a real challenge to condense my answers to be able to fit!

Still, I love the concept, the questions, the overall look of the book, and the gilded pages. Shiny! Can't wait to get started.

An Easy "Time Capsule" Journal Idea

I love to buy journals but often have trouble writing in them after just a few initial entries. It could be that life gets too busy or that there seems to be nothing in particular to write about that I will want to remember later. This journal has solved my writer's block by providing questions at the top of each page.

Pros
- Each page is dated with the month and day (January 1)
- There are five spaces below for the year "20__" so that you can start on the correct date you get the book. You do not have to wait until January to start your journal, but you can, if that's what you would like
- There are four lines to write your answer so you will have to be concise

Cons
- the binding is tight and the pages are rather small so you have to hold the book open to write in it (so it does not lay flat on it's own)
- there is gold foil which lines the outsides of the pages. It looks fantastic now, but I don't know how much it will hold up over the next 5 years
- the cover feels a little more like cardboard so the photo is a little misleading, but it is hardcover and sturdy

Something I wish I knew when I purchased it were the types of questions it would ask, so below are a sampling of the types of questions in the book. Some are more exciting and some are more boring but at least this gives you an idea.

Sample Questions:
What is your mission? (January 1)
Did you kiss someone today? (February 14)
Did you sleep alone last night? (March 3)
Who are you fooling? (April 1)
If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go? (May 25)

I would definitely purchase this as a gift for a friend or anyone who loves to write. I think when the journal is complete it will be really interesting to see how much your answers have (or haven't) changed over five years.

Grant first charted her mother's decline into senile dementia in an article for the Guardian (U.K.). In response to a flood of readers' letters and her own need to examine her extended family history, she expanded that article into this moving account of second-generation Anglo-Jewry, published last year in England. Dual themes of memory and identity underlie the sad account of her mother's illness, which also becomes a metaphor for the lost history of an immigrant family. The family's roots in Eastern Europe were effectively destroyed, not only by the Holocaust but also by the family's desire to remember selectively, and not always truthfully, the story of its past. As a child, Grant thought family stories a bore; now she regrets her lack of interest and lost opportunities to know more about her parents. She chronicles her mother's decline with unflinching honesty, revealing her guilt and impatience with her mother's condition and her failings as a daughter. With nostalgic humor, she looks back on the experiences of her large, extended family of observant Jews who settled in a country where anti-Semitism, while not as virulent as in the Poland they had left, was not unknown. As her mother's condition deteriorates, Grant and her sister come to the painful decision to place her in a nursing home. While there is no upbeat ending to Grant's story, she affirms that people can react with dignity and sensitivity to the inevitable tragedies of old age. (June)

About the Author
Linda Grant was born in Liverpool in 1951. She was educated in Liverpool and studied at the University of York and in Canada. Since 1985 she has worked as a freelance journalist for broadsheet newspapers and magazines including Marie Claire, Vogue and Good Housekeeping. She is the author of Sexing the Millennium, and is a columnist with the Guardian.

Linda Grant's first novel, The Cast Iron Shore, won the David Higham Award in 1996 and was shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Prize She lives in London.

Worth the Read

I listened to Linda Grant on National Public Radio, Fresh Air program yesterday. Very interesting and moving.
I can relate to it as my father went thru a similar decline over a 3 year period. He suffered from TIA "mini-strokes" that slowly diminish selected brain capabilities, many times without the victim's or family's knowledge. Linda relates a similar experience. It's frustrating in not ever really knowing what is going on inside his ticker when you speak. It's frustrating to know that each person loses different capabilities at different times. It drags you down, with everything seeming so one-sided. It's frustrating that modern medicine is essentially powerless to stop this degeneration, with no effective tools or strategy.
Linda is much more articulate than I could be in describing the same experience I went through.
If it does nothing more, it gives those of us a comparative basis by which to judge our own decisions in similar circumstances.
For those who have been thru this, it gives us someone to relate to. For those who have not, it prepares you. As a boomer, I've finally graduated to what I call 'adulthood': where we are sandwiched between two generations who both depend upon us. Calling the experience overwhelming only begins to describe it.
Worth the read.

A memoir of individual memory and family history

Linda Grant, a feature writer for the Guardian [UK], has written a memoir about memory, focusing both on the loss of her family's history as the older generations die off and the deterioration of her mother's mind due to Multi-Infarct Dementia [MID], which stifles short-term memory and gradually scrambles older recollections. The book is also a intensely personal struggle against the guilt and helplessness one feels when making the necessary decision to commit a loved one to an institution.

Grant is descended from Jewish immigrants who arrived from Russian and Poland and settled in Britain and America before the Second World War. (Many of her family's relatives who remained behind were, of course, killed by the Nazis.) A somewhat rebellious daughter during the heady and reckless Sixties, she soon realizes that all those stories that used to bore her as a child will soon be lost forever: "My mother, the last of her generation, was losing her memory," she mourns. "In a hundred years there will no one left alive who remembers her, who can tell you who she was.... Without the past we're nothing, we belong to nobody." All that remain are a few scattered photographs and letters lacking any basic context and the occasional recollection that her mother summons up out of the blue and whose authenticity Grant can no longer verify.

The second aspect of the book is the most moving--and the most laudable. Grant recounts the frustrations and the episodes that led her and her sister to intercede and commit their mother to a care center, and she describes the legal and bureaucratic obstacles that nearly prevented them from making this step. What makes this decision particularly difficult--and, to some strangers, hardhearted--is that her mother is capable of periods of perfect lucidity and social grace. Grant describes how, while her mother's domestic conditions and intellectual capacity deteriorated to the point where she became a danger to herself, she retained an acute awareness of how she appeared to others as well as "the basest, most acquisitive part of ourselves"--the urge to go shopping: "So we shop together, outside time, mother and daughter united each in our own purposeful quest to do what we have always done, and which to her goes on making sense."

What keeps this book from surrendering to guilt and self-pity is Grant's admirable sense of humor--some of her sketches are heart-achingly funny--as well as the research that lends its framework an aura of objectivity. "Remind Me Who I Am, Again" certainly provides comfort and advice to relatives of those with aging family members, but it is also a valuable read to anyone who cares about individual memory and family history.

If you've ever had a relative or loved one slip away into dementia, this book will strike home. And if you've had a friend going through this experience, this book will help you to understand what they are going through. This book, like the experience of living with dementia, is at times funny, at times tearful. It's an honest picture of what it's like to be with someone who is rapidly losing who they were.

Product very well designed and clear to read and understand. Unfortunately the one person I wanted to research was not included. However, that does not detract from the fact that this book could be a very useful tool for anyone researching family who emigrated during this time. Could not fault the book.
