the Golden Book of camping and camp crafts

The book that i recieved was in excellent shape ! i already had a copy of this book but it was missing the last page and back cover. I wanted a complete book looked it up on Amazon.com and found some for sale put in a price and 2 days later there was a confirmation for a sale. suprised the heck out of me. I can and have sat down with my grandson and we went through the book and tied some knots and are hoping that come next spring we can use it to do some camping. thanks

Terrific Book For Kids - Great Nostalgia Piece For Adults

Oh yeah - talk about a time capsule of simpler, more innocent days. This wonderful book made its way into my possession when I was a just a young boy in the very early 60's. I was fascinated with it from the moment I first picked it up. After all, what boy doesn't like camping? I remember spending hours at a time reading it, learning knots, making lists, gathering up camping gear, thinking, planning, and dreaming about going on camping trips. I grew up in the Florida Keys, so the concept of camping down there was considerably different than it was in other areas of the country. Never much in the way of hiking involved. What we did was basically island camping, arriving at our destination by boat or canoe, and spending several days swatting mosquitoes and avoiding severe sunburn. We always had to take plenty of fresh drinking water with us, as there was not any available on any of the islands. So yes, the whole concept of camping as it was presented in this book took a considerable amount of adapting to fit our special circumstances. But that never interfered with or diminished my enjoyment of this book one iota. It was still an indispensable resource to a young boy enamored with the whole idea of camping. I read and re-read this book again and again, probably spending many more hours with it than I did on actual camping trips. Then at some point, when I was considerably older, the book disappeared, and I didn't think much about it again for a good many years.
Then a year or two ago, I was able to get my hands on a nice copy of the 1959 edition. What a delightful blast from the past! I had forgotten how beautifully illustrated the book was, with full-color artwork throughout. All of the kids in the illustrations looked so neat and clean-cut, right out of Leave It to Beaver - just the way we looked in the late 50's and early 60's! Every page I turned brought back wonderful memories of all the hours I spent turning those same pages 50 years earlier. I suppose by today's standards, The Golden Book of Camping and Camp Crafts would be no more than a curiosity piece. I don't have any kids or grandkids of my own that I can share it with. If I did, most likely, they would laugh at its corny drawings and goody two-shoes approach to the whole subject. But I can attest to the powerful attraction it had for me as a young boy. And while the actual camping trips it helped spawn were most likely quite limited in number and duration, I know my youthful days were greatly enriched by the world it allowed me to enter whenever I opened its pages. And the great thing is, now I can go back there again - anytime I like!
It's probably been 30 years now since I've been camping. Who knows? Someday soon, with the help of this marvelous book, I may start planning out yet another trek into the "wild". Or if not, I at least can once again dream about it. Just like 50 years ago, the dreaming and the planning can be as just much fun as the actual trip - and with a lot fewer mosquitoes...
