good war writing

great telling of the gallipoli campaign. steel's book focuses on the british role in the sequence of battles, giving the reader much information concerning both command decisions and troop experiences (the latter via letters home and diary entries). this truly is a wonderful "war book" in that it doesn't glorify war, but at the same time gives us a warranted respect for the sufferings of the warrior.

About the Author
Kenneth Whitten is professor emeritus at the University of Georgia (UGA). Dr. Whitten received his A.B. at Berry College, M.S. at the University of Mississippi, and Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. He taught at Tulane, the University of Southwestern Louisiana, the Mississippi State College of Women, and the University of Alabama before joining the UGA faculty as assistant professor and coordinator of general chemistry in 1967. He remained coordinator of general chemistry throughout his UGA career until his retirement in 1998. His numerous awards include the G.E. Philbrook Chemistry Teacher of the Year Award, the Outstanding Honors Professor, the Franklin College Outstanding Teacher of the Year, the General Sandy Beaver Teaching Award, and a Senior Teaching Fellowship. An award was established in Dr. Whitten's honor in 1998 celebrating outstanding teaching assistants in UGA's department of chemistry.

Raymond Davis is a University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. He received his B.S. at the University of Kansas in 1960, his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1965, and was a Cancer Research Scientist at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute from 1964 to 1968. His awards include the Minnie Stevens Piper Professorship in 1992, the Jean Holloway Award in Chemistry Teaching in 1996, and (five times) the Outstanding Teacher Award given by campus freshman honor societies. He was an inaugural member of the University's Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 1995.

M. Larry Peck, Professor Emeritus at Texas A & M University, received his Ph.D. from Montana State University in 1971. He won the Chemical Manufacturers Association Catalyst Award in 2000, Texas A & M's Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Chemistry Teaching in 2002, and the Division of Chemical Education's Outstanding Service to the Division Award in 2007. Until his retirement in 2006, Dr. Peck taught science at all levels and directed programs designed to improve the teaching of physical science programs now known in Texas as "integrated physics and chemistry." The resource materials developed in these workshops are being used as models for other state-funded teacher training programs.

Best Chem text on the market!!!

This is the best general chemistry text on the market. I used Ebbing's text at first, that text is misleading. Lot information is out of date, but in this book everything's very clear.
It's problem solving tips in each section is very helpful. It helped me alot avoiding common errors and clarified many misconceptions.
It REALLY is the best chem text on the market as one of reviewer said. At least much better than two other books i used; one by Ebbing, one by Adkins. Don't buy those books. They're waste of money and probably ruin your clear mastery of chemistry.
This book is nice. With the CD-rom it will be even better.

The Best Out There

I cannot believe somebody has not written a review for this book. I had it for my g. chem. I and II classes. This book should be the standard textbook by which all others should be judged (actually, it's a surprise how this book has not put out of business all others -- I guess people are looking more for attractive subtitles and dazzling covers rather than real science). Together with Serway's "Physics for Scientists and Enginners," I made a 14 in the physical section of the MCAT, or a 99%. (and I'm certainly not a genius -- I just worked hard every day). Highly recommended.

Mistakes

This is a very complex textbook with TONS of mistakes within. One example that I remember is on page 85, question #66. It says its composition by mass is 49.4% C, 7.64% H, 17.7% N, 15.3% O, and 10.1% S. When working out this equation it will not come out right, it should be 47.2% C, 6.55% H, 13.0% N, 25.9% O and 7.43% C. I hope some of this helps!

Nigel Evans is Assistant Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Business and Law at Teeside University. About the Author
Greg Noonan was a pioneer in home-brewing methodology, an acclaimed brewing author, a co-founder of one of the first brewpubs in New England, an innovator in professional brewing techniques and a truly great publican. He opened theVermont Pub and Breweryin Burlington, VT in 1988 after getting the legislature to pass a bill to accommodate the concept of brewpubs. In 1993, Greg wroteScotch Alefor theClassic Beer Stylesseries fromBrewers Publicationsand followed that with a revision of his original work titledNew Brewing Lager Beer, in 1996. He received theRecognition Awardfrom theAmerican Homebrewers Associationin 1997, theAchievement Award fromBrewers Associationin 2004, theRussell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Brewingin 2005 and numerous posthumous awards. Good resource

Lagers are a difficult style: the most authentic producers don't bother importing to the US. The Americans that emulate the Pilsners Marzens and Helles won't ever hone in on those beautiful malty flavors.

Lagers are hard to do because maltiness is hard to capture. Once you have one though, preferably for longer than a 3 day binge in Germany, you start to realize what you're missing.

I don't think this resource can give you everything you need, but its certainly a start in the right direction. As a brewer, you won't be able to go completely down this road without the help of someONE- not a text, because the best trade techniques are not written but passed down.

More scientific explanations of the brewing process, and a good book for any brewer to own. Many books give too cursory of an brewing explanation, and while this may be a bit too detailed -- it is a great companion to Gordon Strong's Brewing Better Beer.

If you've read Papazian and Palmer already, this may be the next logical choice. Far more technically oriented than the other two, Noonan lays out the plan for decoction mashing after going in-depth with malt, water chemistry and treatment, yeast and fermentation. While the chapter with step-by-step instructions for decoction mashing is the clearest and most direct I've read, the book as a whole is a fantastic reference for brewing techniques in general and lager techniques in particular. A staple of any good brewing library.

Caveat emptor!

While Comeau, LaFleur, and HarperCollins emphasize the usefulness of Wheelock's Latin for those learning the language independently, this Workbook does not make it easy for the independent learner. Although the book states that the answer key is available for free not only to educators but to those who verify independent study status, HarperCollins has continually refused my requests, as an independent student of Latin, for the answer key. Therefore, I am left with a book that seems to contain excellent excercises in Latin, but with no way of checking my work. I have had so much trouble obtaining the answer key that I am even considering returning the book. Buyer beware!

A great aid to later editions of Wheelock

Wheelock is one of the better books to use for learning Latin, both in classroom and private study settings. One of the disadvantages of Wheelock is that more practice assignments are generally needed than come with the standard chapter questions and sentences. This book by Comeau and LaFleur is of assistance here. LaFleur has 'inherited' the Wheelock text, and is responsible for updated editions.
Comeau and LaFleur follow the same sequence of chapters as does Wheelock, and draw much of the material from the supplementary exercises given by Wheelock in the back of his book. Each chapter's exercises are arranged in four headings - objectives, grammar, drill, and practice sentences. It is in the grammar and drill sections that the real value of this text comes through, given that the practice sentences are already in Wheelock (and the key to them is there).
This is a real workbook -- fill-in-the-blank-type of formatting make it useful for the student to write directly in the book. These could be scored in class, or (where the key is available) by the student himself or herself. There are no supplemental materials here -- no index, no glossary, no key -- as all of these are in Wheelock, and the book assumes ownership of the Wheelock book already.
A useful supplement, this book is worth getting for those who wish to master the material in Wheelock more quickly and more completely. There is an online key to the exercises for those who wish the material (registering at the publisher was required for this when I did it).

Answer key easy to get

Unlike some other reviewers, I had no trouble getting the answer key. I emailed the site as explained in the book, and within 12 hours, got a response with login and password.

The book is great. The only problem I have with the Wheelock text is I cannot check my sententiae antinquae (but the extra exercises in the back come with an answer key).

This workbook is a great supplement to the main text, especially since you can check your own work.

Great for medical reimbursement!

Getting paid by medical or insurance providers requires very behaviorally focused writing, and this book provides it! I LOVE this series and recommend to everyone (especially new clinicians/trainees). I HIGHLY recommend it! Tons of examples that your can modify and use in your own prog notes.

Saves a lot of valuable time

This book helps me save time on paper work and billing for Medi-cal in my work as a high school counselor. I can use this time to focus more on what really matters: the clients! Not only does it help me structure my progress notes, but it gives me ideas for interventions that I might not otherwise have thought of. I have recommended this to several other MFT friends.

About the Author
Stephen Marshak is Professor of Geology and Head of the Department of Geology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, an M.S. from the University of Arizona, and a B.A. from Cornell University. He has served as Chair of the Division of Structural Geology and Tectonics of the Geological Society of America. Dr. Marshak has written numerous research articles on topics in structural geology and tectonics, and has authored or co-authored four books: Basic Methods of Structural Geology; Earth Structure, Earth: Portrait of a Planet; and Essentials of Geology.

The best of geology

This book is indeed the best introduction to geology you can ever get. It has the most fundamental knowlegde and at the same time it includes a higher level. So it is for all people with an interest in geology. If you are a student and even if you are a normal person with great interest this book will become your favorite. It combins beautyful pictures with nice drawings and great text. It gives a good picture of what it is like to be a geologist and what the work includes.

Simply: you get the best of geology!! Injoy:o)

New Revised Edition Is Even Better

The sub-title 'Portrait of a Planet' gives you some idea of what this book is all about. It is almost a coffee table picture book, filled with photographs of the earth. Yet at the same time its first edition became the text book of choice at over 300 colleges and universities around the world.

This is the brand new second edition. The new edition has taken comments about the previous edition, integrated them with the results of recent discoveries and more examples, photographs, art work, and text to make the second edition even better. Each chapter of the first edition was sent to an expert reviewer (a world leader on that particular subject) for comment.

The biggest change in the new edition is to stress plate tectonics earlier and stronger to provide the underlying theory that covers most of current geologic thinking.

I also like his explanation of the oil situation. He looks at alternatives and points out that we may well be living in a unique time of history.

Excellent!

This books serves as an excellent introduction to geology and earth sciences. It is extremely well written and explains difficult concepts well. Because it is written as a college textbook the examples and analogies given are drawn from common experience that are easy to understand.
Among the best part of the book are the illustrations which are beautiful to look at and supplement the text expertly, again reinforcing concepts.
I appreciated the way the author has integrated the broad theory of plate tectonics throughout all sections of the book. In particular he has expertly woven the theory of plate tectonics into the history of the earth's evolution and how that in turn has led to the evolution of life.
This book is a great introduction for college students and for the educated layman looking to better appreciate and understand this wonderful place we call earth.
