About the Author
Haraldur Sigurdsson is emeritus professor at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island in the United States of America. He has worked on volcanic processes and the geochemistry of volcanic rocks for over fifty years. His studies have in part been focused on the impact of volcanic activity on human populations, especially his work on Vesuvius in Italy, Tambora in Indonesia, El Chichon in Mexico and studies of deadly gas bursts from Cameroon crater lakes. He has also studied the global environmental effects of meteorite impacts, such as the one that marks the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary. His books include Melting the Earth, accounting for the evolution of ideas about formation of magmas and the origin of volcanic eruptions. Haraldur is currently director of the Volcano Museum in Stykkisholmur, Iceland.

Bruce Houghton is the Gordon MacDonald Professor in Volcanology at University of Hawaii at Manoa and Hawaiian State Volcanologist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He is also Science Director at the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center at University of Hawaii. Previously he had a career of twenty five years as a volcanologist in New Zealand, culminating in leading the scientific response to the 1995-96 eruption of Ruapehu volcano. Bruce has published over 220 research papers in international journals and has worked in Alaska, Chile, El Salvador, Greece, Hawaii, Iceland, Italy, Germany, Nicaragua, Thailand and New Zealand.

Steve McNutt is a Professor in the School of Geosciences at the University of South Florida (USF). He has worked on volcanic processes using seismology, infrasound, and lightning instruments for over 35 years. He worked half time for the Alaska Volcano Observatory from 1991-2012 and was closely involved in monitoring efforts for eruptions at Spurr, Pavlof, Shishaldin, Augustine, Okmok, Kasatochi, and Redoubt volcanoes. He coordinates seismology research at USF, and presently supervises 3 graduate students and a Post-Doc. His research interests include: 1) studies of source and propagation effects for volcanic tremor, low-frequency events, and explosion earthquakes; 2) volcanic hazards assessments in Alaska, California, and Central America; 3) the mechanical behavior of volcanoes, including periodicity of eruptions, and the effects of earth tides, sea level variations, and tectonic stresses on triggering eruptive activity; 4) volcano infrasound; and 5) volcanic lightning. From July 1999 to July 2007 he served as Secretary-General for the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior.

Hazel Rymer is presently the Dean and Director of Studies in the Faculty of Science and Profesor of Environmental Volcanology.

Hazel has developed and championed the use of microgravity as a tool for monitoring active volcanoes. She has used this method to identify sub-surface processes at calderas in a state of unrest and at persistently active volcanoes and this has given geoscientists considerable insight into the range of mechanisms responsible for initiating and sustaining volcanic activity. The technique Hazel pioneered is now the standard method for gravity monitoring on volcanoes; it remains the only way to quantify the sub-surface mass changes that occur before, during and after eruptions.

John Stix has studied active volcanoes for 26 years, specializing in volcanic gases, eruption mechanisms, and the impact of volcanic activity. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in volcanology, natural hazards, and environmental geology. He also is involved in field courses, where he exposes students to hands-on observations of natural processes such as volcanic eruptions and floods. He has been involved in many training courses and workshops in Canada, the US, and Latin America to teach volcanology. He has collaborated extensively with colleagues in Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Ecuador in volcano studies and volcanic hazards. From 2003 to 2010 he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin of Volcanology, the leading international journal related to the study of volcanoes and volcanism. He is currently part of an international team to drill into an active silicic magma body beneath Krafla volcano in Iceland.

Part I. Nobody Nowhere

There is no typical person with autism; yet, like many people on the spectrum, Donna Williams was distant from the world. That was her world. A gifted writer, Donna sought to reconcile her world with the world around her.

Donna, like many people with autism, often had difficulty in perceiving and understanding other people’s speech and facial expressions. Yet, she felt extremely motivated to try—and be like them. And she drew upon one of her marked strengths: communicating in writing. In Nobody Nowhere and its follow-up, Somebody Somewhere, Donna was able to tell her story and express her feelings in an intensely personal and poignant way.

Even Donna’s first dream was nothingness—spots of “fluffy color” surrounded her in a sea of whiteness. She rubbed her eyes until a loud slap from her mother’s hand landed on her, interrupting her attempt to understand her world. She resumed rubbing her eyes, which ended with yet another slap—it was time for her to learn about “the world.”

Donna writes extensively of her troubled childhood, a world characterized by abuse, ridicule, lack of support and, eventually, rejection. However, as painful as it was, her dysfunctional childhood that gave her the impetus and “freedom to find emotionally detached corners of the world from which to study and teach myself things through my two characters.” Donna conceived two characters, Willie and Carol, with whom she could relay her emotions and eventually communicate with the world. In a strange twist, Donna is thankful for her “bad” parents; without her, Donna claims she would not be able to live independently and, worse, be confined to an institution.

Oftentimes, Donna was besieged with illogical emotions, such as that affection and kindness could incapacitate her—or at least cause pain. Ignoring such a deluge of sensations often left her “without emotional feeling and with a purely robotic mental response—if that.” Then, again, losing all awareness of the world—of all things usually considered real—and ultimately losing all sense of self offered Donna her only dependable security. People who practice Zen medication and yoga do the very same to achieve inner peace and tranquility.

Donna developed a close relationship with Bryn, who introduced her to the poetry of T.S. Eliot, who wrote “In my beginning is my end” and “in my end is my beginning.” From the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, Donna learned that beauty can be found in simplicity, and one needs to look beyond the surface of things often dismissed as ugly.

Donna’s tumultuous childhood consisted of the adults of her family and school to impose the complexities of the world, when she sought simplicity to make sense of her world, which she expresses in heartfelt poetry:

Shattered dreams, broken glass,
Echoes of a shattered past,
Too many names strewn about,
The kind that one can live without.
They’re the shadows here, within,
That tears apart personality.

After a particularly difficult spell, Donna decided it was time to say good-bye to Willie. She took a boy doll, placed him in a shiny black box, and buried it. “Let go, I say, my tear-soaked stranger…. I’m afraid that you have drowned beneath the many dreams which did evade you and the many stars so out of reach. Let go, I say. I must take over … and perish in a past of shadows, so that I may walk a stronger path.

Dealing with Carol, however, was much more challenging. She smiled, but it was one in which “you can see the fear in the grimace-like smile.” It took rekindling an old friendship with Mary to undo the spell.

“As always, my motivation to interact was to prove my sanity and avoid getting locked in an institution,” she writes. Over the years, Donna’s school career would take her through many schools. As an adolescent, anxiety and pain tormented her. Sometimes, Donna thought she was going mad. She had her share of destructive spells and tantrums and could scream out, “I’m not &#*$ mad!” Art and music were her favorite classes. Other times, she would go out and wonder, to “make my own classes.” Donna’s journey was a perilous one.

A magnificent write..

As the parent of an autistic, I have searched near 30 years for answers of my sons strange self. Medical persons were unable to help and autistic Eli had no speech. Donnas book is an unusual write as she gives depth and reason to many autistics traits with reasoning and feeling. Her journey is one of incredible strength and she is brilliant in her words and talents today. Her childhood was tragic but she managed to find her way..on her own. To combat and bring herself to a level of functioning acceptance. I shall read this again and would like to recommend- Nobody Nowhere-to each person searching for answers about autism or any person looking to experience a wonderful read. Thank you Donna for sharing your life. it certainly has helped mine. Carol

It is one of my favorite books

I loved it because Donna Williams did a great job explaining what her life was like with undiagnosed autism and living with her alcoholic mother. There was nothing I didn't like about it. If you enjoy autism and autobiographies about autism than this is a great book for you to read because it takes place in a time before autism was recognized as a spectrum disorder meaning that people with it had different symptoms.

The Suzuki violin instruction book offers new engravings in a more easily readable 12" x 9" format. There are no changes to the repertoire in Book 5, but there are some changes in fingerings and bowings to reflect more current performance practice and music pedagogy. There are some additional technical exercises including 3-octave G Major and G Minor scales and arpeggios.The revised CD complementing the book includes new recordings by William Preucil, Concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra. The piano accompaniment is performed by Linda Perry on acoustic piano. These performances were recorded without reference to a metronome and have a human feel to them. The Suzuki Method of Talent Education is based on Dr. Shinichi Suzuki's view that every child is born with ability, and that man is the son of his environment. According to Dr. Suzuki, a world-renowned violinist and teacher, the greatest joy an adult can know comes from developing a child's potential so he or she can express all that is harmonious and best in human beings. Students are taught using the mother-tongue approach.

Excellent book for intermediate/advanced players. The CD is helpful too. I highly recommend Suzuki books as the songs are played often in concerts and events. :)

Taking the class with Soldworks 2015-2016. All the information is current enough. The book spells everything out pretty well if you are doing it on your own, with the only exception is the order in which tools and topics are brought up is kind of out of order. If you get stuck look multiple chapters ahead to find the answer.

Is author Fallon a law-abiding research scientist and family man or a dangerous psychopath? In this memoir-meets-pop-sci examination of psychopathy, Fallon discovers, to his initial surprise, that he has brain functions similar to a cohort of hardened criminals. The book takes chapter-length looks at the neurological features, possible genetic and epigenetic causes, and developmental triggers of psychopathy, with detours through Fallon's personal and familial history. Unfortunately, Fallon's memoir of realizations is emotionally flat (which is perhaps unfair criteria to judge a psychopath by), lazily assembled, and amounts to little more than a confessional booth's enumeration of sins. He cheats with his kids at Scrabble, parties too hard, alienates his co-workers, and takes his brother to an Ebola-infested cave and considers using him as lion bait. These vices, Fallon is happy to tell you, provide him a great deal of malevolent glee, though there is little pleasure for readers to bask in—Fallon's narration is too sterile and, ironically, too self-serving to ever entice the reader. For a quick overview of current theories of brain science and mental illness, Fallon's book is useful; for insight into foreign mental and emotional territories, look elsewhere. Superficial, simplistic and self-serving

The Psychopath Inside revolves around a single event. It began in 2004, when the author, a retired professor of anatomy and neurobiology, was asked by controversial psychiatrist Daniel Amen to analyze PET brain scans of about 50 killers. Amen had characterized some of his subjects as impulsive killers; others, as psychopaths. When Fallon did a blind analysis, he was able to distinguish between the two groups based on the psychopaths' pattern of brain activation. Primarily, they showed a diminished level of activity in the limbic cortex, which regulates emotion. (While not giving precise data on his accuracy, the never-modest author assures us that he "nailed it.") The following year, he discovered by happenstance that he himself shared that same abnormal pattern of brain activity.

Unfortunately, this hook is far too thin to sustain an entire book. So we end up with a convoluted mishmash: Lengthy expositions on brain anatomy and genetics, alternating with superficial musings on his own personal history. We learn that he is a cad: He partied too hard in college, he flirts with other women, he disappoints friends and colleagues, he puts family members in dangerous situations. Worst of all, he confesses, he just doesn't care. All this, he conveniently blames on his defective brain.

But, as every student of science knows, an "N of 1" does not a convincing case make. We don't know the base rate of this type of brain functioning among the normal population, or among academics or researchers such as Fallon. All we know is that his brain was similar to some unspecified proportion of 50 brain scans of killers. He attempts to bolster his case by dredging up the murderous proclivities of some far distant ancestors, saying they likely carried the "warrior gene" that programs for violence. But who among us, at least those of us of Anglo-Saxon heritage, couldn't find murderous ancestors if we searched hard enough? Again, we aren't privy to the base rates of violence among males in the times and places that his ancestors inhabited.

The current cultural obsession with psychopathy has allowed Fallon to make a second career out of his accidental discovery. With his superficially compelling first-person account, he has become a self-anointed expert on the psychopathic brain, appearing on TV shows including an episode of the CBS crime series Criminal Minds. His rigid genetic determinism fits well with the dark and fatalistic vision of humanity that dominates in this era of mass incarceration. By rooting criminality in biology, the iconic psychopath foregrounds intrinsic evil, thereby marginalizing social problems and excusing institutional failures at rehabilitation. Ultimately, The Psychopath Inside demonstrates Fallon's intimate familiarity with brain circuitry and functioning. But it also exposes his startling ignorance of the larger historical and cultural forces that influence human behavior.

The double benefit of this book

Full disclosure: I am a colleague and friend of Jim Fallon, which means I got a double benefit from reading The Psychopath Inside. I learned much about the brain of a psychopath, but just as important, I learned something about why Jim feels compelled to live life as fully as humanly possible. As the reviewers note, his book is different. In his attempt to reveal the mind (or is it the "brain"?) of a high functioning socio-psychopath, Jim confesses to personal behaviors and attitudes that few others would. Contrary to what other readers presumed, this book is not an attempt to undertake "science." Rather, the book is a memoir of the life of a scientist who discovered that he has the problem that he has studied for many years as a neuroscientist, which means he offers two sources of insight.

The book raised a bunch of puzzles for me, one of which is this: How can Jim Fallon reconcile his self-professed libertarian political views with determinism (under which people's behavior is 100 percent determined by genetic and environmental forces outside of their control). Might not their political propensities also be determined? Maybe he can't help himself? Will have to raise the issue with Jim.

Writer was so self absorbed, it was irritating. Also he could have said the same in much less time, there was too much fluff and repetition. A lot of what he uses as examples of psychopathy are normal variants of emotion and behavior. I believe he is trying to fit his actions to match his theories, why not just say his theories are not hard science?

Adequate Reference Material

This shop reference for students and apprentices was not what I was expecting. I bought it for metrology references to help train some line inspectors. It has since become well thumbed and greasy because my machinists keep borrowing it, preferring it over the complete handbook. They like that it's not as detailed and just covers what they need to know.

Very poorly edited.

There are two sections that specifically try to explain tapping speeds but they repeat the exact same information. Also, one of the sections is pulled straight from the machinery's handbook and references tables that do not appear in this book.

When you look up this topic in the index it points you to the section that refers to the missing tables and makes no mention of the other section.

Again, very poorly edited. I do not recommend it.

Handy little book for the tool box

I keep this book in my toolbox at work. It has the vital information I need for around the shop such as feed and speed rates for the lathe and mill, broaching and drilling, indexing. Plenty of useful information concerning screw threads, keys and keyseats,allowances and tolerances in english and metric, inspection, and tons of the math needed for geometry and trig. Way too much information to list. Excellent book. This information comes from the "Machinery's Handbook" and other sources but is smaller and fits nicely in the top of my toolbox.
