About the Author
Marcella Kelly teaches the Introduction to Business course at Santa Monica College. In addition to her well-recognized expertise in the areas of marketing and management, Ms. Kelly has extensive industry experience in today's business environment. Ms. Kelly earned her master's degree from UCLA and balances her firsthand business experience with strong teaching credentials built through years of experience in the classroom.

Jim McGowen, a professor at Southwestern Illinois College, has taught the Introduction to Business course for thousands of students throughout the past twenty years. He also has extensive experience teaching finance and accounting. He holds a PhD in economics from Auburn University and has training in this area of specialty. An experienced author in Introduction to Business, Dr. McGowen balances his teaching expertise with his co-author's practical industry experience for a student-oriented, faculty-approved unique approach in BUSN6.

Chuck Williams is Dean of the College of Business at Butler University. Dr. Williams previously served as Dean of the Eberhardt School of Business at the University of the Pacific and as Associate Professor of Management at the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University. Dr. Williams has also served as Associate Dean and Chair of Management and has taught at Michigan State University and Oklahoma State University. Dr. Williams received his B.A. in psychology from Valparaiso University. He specialized in organizational behavior, human resources, and strategic management while earning his M.B.A and Ph.D. in business administration from Michigan State University. His research interests include employee recruitment and turnover, performance appraisal, and employee training and goal setting. Dr. Williams has published research in the JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, the ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT, HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT REVIEW, PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY, and the ORGANIZATIONAL RESEARCH METHODS JOURNAL. He was a member of the JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT's editorial board and currently serves as a reviewer for numerous other academic journals. He was also Webmaster for the Research Methods Division of the Academy of Management.

It's fine if you have to.

This book is actually pretty relevant to our learning right now. It provides insights based not only on things that happened fifty years ago, but also on things that happened about two years ago. The last business book I had still asked me questions about companies from the '90s that were actually out of business. Also a plus, the chapters are blessedly short.

That said, the quizzes that the author provides for the teachers are terrible. (Not that this is anything new)
Also unfortunately, since it's a published book, the references can only become more dated and useless.

You can get all of this information for FREE on entrepreneurial blogs. Please understand that the fundamentals of business are still the same, and this textbook (like any decent learning tool) does try to reinforce those core values. (Albeit with the required fluff for making it seem modern, relevant, and purchasable.)

Great Textbook!

The information in the book is very relevant to the society we live in today. Very easy to read and included some interesting information. The chapters were about average length. I'm glad my school choose this textbook for the intro to business classes. After the accounting chapter 8 (which was one of the hardest sections btw, so be sure to study that thoroughly) my teacher taught mostly through the power point instead of having us read the book. Like another reviewer said the tests from the book asked some random questions, but thankfully my teacher gave us a really good study guide.

I needed it asap, so I choose the 1-day shipping option, and it arrived right on time and in really good condition,except it had a small scratch at the top, which I think was from shipping. I Saved $40 by buying it from amazon instead of at the bookstore. So if you need this book, I would get it from here.

Also I never used the Coursemate for my class, so I can't comment on how it was. But It includes the E-book, quizzes, and games. So If anyone would like to have the access code, I will be more than happy to send it to you.

I liked it

I like the textbooks made by these people.

If my memory serves me correctly, they have tear-out study sheets for each chapter, making it very handy to review key concepts and terms on a chapter-by-chapter basis.

They also do a good job of including nice visuals to liven up the reading experience. It's much nicer than slogging through very dense, never-ending passages of text.

On the downside, the books these people make are always very thin. I can't help but think they could double the page count and include way more information, and the book still wouldn't be too big. Their books are so thin, it almost feels like they're skimping on information sometimes.

Douglas E. Richards is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of WIRED and numerous other novels (see list below). A damn fine read.

Super smart author with clever original assembly of known science with a touch of "what if". Mix this with useful romance and character development to keep it interesting and the result is a definite page turner in an increasingly difficult search for worthwhile science fiction.

A good foray into time travel

This is the best science fiction book I have read; ever. Douglas Richards tackles the problem of time travel in a new way. Why would so many people be obsessed with a technology that takes you back a mere half second? The author's explanation is terrific. You should read it to find out. The science here is flawless and the author delves into the repercussions of half a second time travel in a very convincing fashion. And the plot is faultless. The villains do the most rational thing and kill their threats immediately; not just wait for the protagonist to free himself. They don't stall in boasting their achievements or revealing the plot to the protagonist. They just go ahead and shoot whoever they don't want. Finally, a well-planned, well-told story.

Wonderful blend of science and adventure!

I have read and liked earlier novels of D.Richards but Split Second tops them all being a clever mixture of scientific aspects of time travel,its possible grave consequences and adventurous plot.
As we all I have always been fascinated with time travel but before Split Second I never thought about its side effects - how the universe might "block" time travel or limit it to "split second" to avoid possible grave outcome for humans, about the danger of replicating objects or humans travelling back and forth in time, and other wonders of science Mr.Richards wrote about.
Reading that book I kept returning to pages describing scientific aspects of time travel and even jotted down names of a few books on the subject Mr.Richards recommended.
I won't describe the plot of the book because it would spoil the pleasure of reading it for other people, but, when I read Split Second I felt like the door into the future has been opened for me just a little and I am very grateful to D.Richards for that experience!

THEORETICAL BASES OF INDO-EUROPEAN is a handbook to the field by Winfred P. Lehmann, one of the greatest scholars in comparative linguistics in the 20th century. It is perhaps the only up-to-date handbook available, and is worth obtaining for any hoping to understand the means by which languages from Irish to Hindi can be traced to a common ancestor.

Lehmann's personal approach to introducing comparative Indo-European linguistics is not merely to talk about what is currently believed, but to trace each theoretical breakthrough over the past two centuries. As a result, students will be quickly become acquainted with the big names in the field and the laws they formulated. The standard handbooks of yesteryear, such as those of Szeremenyi and Brugmann, are summarised, and the basic methods for comparative reconstruction are laid out. Only then does Lehmann move on to displaying the view of the proto-language that we have reached to the present moment.

There are two chapters on phonology. The first is that of the proto-language just prior to its breaking up into dialects, i.e. Proto-Indo-European. The infrequency of the voiced unaspirated labial (b) and the "glottalic theory" proposed by Gamkrelidze and Ivanov are discussed in depth, and with a critical view. The second chapter on phonology concerns that of Pre-Indo-European, when internal reconstruction can show what the language looked like before the disappearance of the laryngeals and the fragmentation of its ablaut system. Morphology is split over two chapters, the first of which discusses nominal elements and the second verbal elements. As is Lehmann's style, the syntax of the proto-language and of Pre-Indo-European are covered at incredible length. Finally, there is a brief section on the search for the Indo-European homeland.

Though published in 1993, THEORETICAL BASES is the most useful introductory handbook available. It is recent enough to devote full attention to the findings of Soviet typologists which suggest Pre-Indo-European was an active language. Lehmann is refreshingly neutral, displaying all sides of recent disputes, and always letting the student know that his assertions have opposing views. The only real competition is Szemerenyi's INTRODUCTION TO INDO-EUROPEAN LINGUISTICS and Fortson's INDO-EUROPEAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. The first, even in its third edition of 1990, is decades out of date and gives an idiosyncratic view of phonology (Szemerenyi was the last holdout against laryngeal theory). The second is overly simplistic and often makes certain things seem settled and done with when they are still very much in dispute.

Lehmann's THEORETICAL BASES is hands-down the best introduction to this fascinating field now available. While there's other handbooks worth taking a gander at, this one is definitely worth purchasing and keeping in one's personal library.

The Way Theory Should Be

This book is unique in that it presents a huge mass of scholarly material and is extremely readable at the same time. The way this is accomplished is that the development of theories are addressed through the history of their development. It's amazing to see a topic like this comprehensively treated in an almost narrative manner. Aside from the enjoyability of the read, you get the benefit of learning two things at once: (1) The Theoretical Bases of Indo-European Linguistics, and (2) the history of the scholars and their work (or how (1) got that way). Essential for anyone interested in IE Linguistics or the history of scholarship (bonus if you're interested in both).

He introduces the modern methodology and principles on the phonology, morphology and syntax for the Pre-Indo-European and Proto-Indo-European. This book is highly recommendable for the beginners and experts on the Indo-European linguistics.

Naginata - a minor disappointment

The book is well written and laid out. It would have benefited from better editing and proofreading.
The real disappointment I had was the physical size of the book. I didn't look at the fine print that gave the dimensions of the book. From the relative dimensions of the picture of the cover, I was expecting a 10" x 12" or at least an 8" x 10" size format. The book is actually 6" x 8". That doesn't affect the quality of writing, but it does affect the pictures. When showing a series of pictures of a kata, with 4 photos to a page, in this format the apparent size of the models demonstrating the forms are less than an inch high. Some are less than 3/4 of an inch tall on the page. Detail is impossible to make out. This book is not even as large as the average hardback bestseller.

Review from someone who is not a Naginata expert.

I'm a professional Martial arts teacher (Aikido), I recently got on a kick to know more about the Yari and Naginata. But there isn't a whole lot of information out there on the subject in English. So when I found this book I was very excited. The focus of the book is clearly on the modern practice of the Naginata- which wasn't my main interest; but I still found it interesting. There is a pretty good section on the history of the Naginata, and some good explications of modern Naginata practice. Being someone who is not interested in modern Naginata there is a large section on the specific rules and practices of Atarashii Naginata, which I didn't care for. That of coarse would be a great section if that is your main interest. I found the book useful and interesting. It was reasonably well written and covers a lot of material. All and all I would recommend the book, but not get too overly excited about it if you're not mostly interested in the modern practice of Naginata.

Don't waste your time

This book is no more than cribbed excerpts from the recording sessions and some labored explanations of what each song is "about". I'm guessing that this is to replace the lyrics that they couldn't get clearance for. Highly subjective, of course,but some defy reason. Glass Onion? Really? There are other books that do a better job.

This book has so much wisdom. I find myself reading it very slowly to stop and really think about what she has to say. This volume of her diary is more disconnected than the one prior, but the insight is much more profound.

Anais Nin's Diary is the best diary I have ever read. It is so detailed like capturing her thought patterns so intricately that one is amazed at her depth of character. She is quite honest in her relationships to June and Henry Miller.
You are going to love it if you love reading personal accounts or diaries. This one takes it to another level.

Beginning with the deconstructed detective novels of the New York Trilogy, Paul Auster has proved himself to be one of the most adventurous writers in contemporary fiction. In book after book, he seems compelled to reinvent his style from scratch. Yet he always returns to certain preoccupations--most notably, solitude and coincidence--and these themes get a powerful workout in this early memoir. In the first half, "Portrait of an Invisible Man," Auster comes to terms with the death of his father, and as he investigates this elusive figure, he makes a rather shocking (and enlightening) discovery about his family's history. The second half, "The Book of Memory," finds the author on more abstract ground, toying with the entwined metaphors of coincidence, translation, solitude, and language. But here, too, the autobiographical element gives an extra kick to Auster's prose and keeps him from sliding off into armchair aesthetics. An eloquent, mesmerizing book.

Deep, beatiful book

First of all some words so you know something about me. My mother language is Spanish.
I am reading "The invention of solitude" in English, on my kindle. Very useful to have in a touch the access to a very complete dictionary, so I can go through unusual meanings and uses of a word or expression when I find it in the text.
I have read many books from Auster, but none was like this, an essay.

The author shares his experience since the news of his father's death, and his reflections through the process of taking care of his belongings. Deep thoughts about life and death, and the way each one's childhood experience shapes the personality.
Haven't finished the book yet, but the first part is deeply moving. Love the author, feels like you are listening to a friend in an intimate talk.
Will write again when I finish. I apologize for any mistake in English, hope my vision is useful for you.

An essential work from a master

This book is essential to understand how Auster thinks, shedding a lot of light on his other works. It tells about the aftermath of his father's death from two perspectives: first-person and third-person. It raises compelling themes such as solitude and coincidence.

Great technique. However, I don't like Auster expressed views and reflections on life itself.
In this case, the son isn't the victim. The father is. In any event, I would recommend the book. It's hard but I don't have regrets.

Dont meet my expectations

I have the 8th edition of this book and what really surpise me is that , it doesnt have the answer to the questions. You can only view it on the point..to impossible. If youre a nursing student with a limited budget.. Stay away from this book.

Does not include answers. 9th edition does.

This WORKBOOK does not even have answers to its questions. If this textbook and the accompanying workbook are forced upon you, buy the 9th Edition, NOT the 10th... for some reason the publishers decided it would be a fabulous idea to OMIT the ANSWERS to a WORKBOOK, used for studying. Great call, people. Clearly, you did not have the actual users of the book in mind when making that choice.

DON'T buy the 10th or later edition, if you have to buy it at all. Complete waste of money.
