A valiant attempt to prepare the daring

So, whoever rates this book 1 star is obviously looking for a panacea. In contrast, whoever rates this book 5 stars went into the CFA program blind (or they are biased because they know the author). While this book is certainly not the holy grail, it is just as equally not utterly useless. In my humble opinion, this book deserves 3� stars--meaning it is definitely worth the read and I would recommend it to most. I would have given it 4 stars except pretty much half the book is filled with information that can be found (fairly easy, I might add) on the institute’s website. With that in mind, as one reviewer says, it is overpriced (yet another reason why the book did not yield 4 stars from me).

I do give the book some credit though because it does offer some valuable information. Particularly, the book provides tremendous insight for the ESL population. The author also provides sound wisdom in developing a strategy/study plan. In my opinion, the study plan suggestions are well suited for those who:
-do not have a written study plan (or at least an outline)
-are having trouble developing a study plan
-are unsure about their current study plan
-whose study plan drastically underestimates the comprehensive nature of the CFA program

A part from the above, my biggest takeaway came from Chapter 4: The Second Secret to Passing CFA exams. Other chapters of value (for me at least) are 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 16, Recap + Sample Schedules, and Test Preparation Resources. I really like the intentions of Chapter 14.

Overall, it’s definitely worth the read. I applaud the author for her efforts and I commend her for her contribution to the CFA community.

An insightful guide to a strategic study plan

As a level 1 candidate for Dec 2014, I bought this book in April 2014 to prepare for CFA L1 studying.

I found out about the book through the 300hours.com forum, and since it was just newly published, I figured it would be a good investment. I was right.

The author gives a very brief outline of what to expect from the CFA as far as test format and exam procedures go. The best part of the book regards the general study tips that Rachel developed (she passed each exam on her first try) through her own trial-and-error process. She outlines elements that were most time-efficient in her own study plans, including her expert opinion on the different 3rd party providers she's used.

I particularly value the author's analyzing of each level's topic weightings, and how to interpret which topics to focus on.

Additionally, she includes a calendar template for each CFA exam level for overwhelmed candidates (like me) who don't know where to begin.

I spent the weekend reading and highlighting the book as soon as it arrived in the mail; it didn't take very long to get through thanks to the author's concise writing.

I had spent hours reading various CFA blogs before buying the book, so I was hesitant that I'd learn anything new. To my surprise, I believe that the biggest dividend I've realized is the confidence I've gained through developing a strategy from Rachel's guidelines.

I definitely recommend buying this book to anyone who is interested in taking the CFA exam. Read it early and develop your own plan well in advance.

Finally, I will come back and edit this review after I hear back from my L1 December results.

If you are considering the CFA Charterholder designation...............read this book first

This is an excellent, detailed blueprint for pursuing the CFA Charterholder designation. It is very easy to read and comprehend. Beyond a detailed explanation of the requirements and process associated with achieving the CFA charter, Rachel gives very specific guidance and advice on how to approach one's preparation for each exam........while leaving room for the reader to modify his/her approach based on their unique circumstances (i.e. work schedule, family obligations, etc.). Rachel comes across as being sincere and very humble concerning her own abilities (both assets and shortcomings), and realistic in terms of the expectations that a CFA candidate should have when initiating the process. While some information can be found elsewhere (as is noted by some of the other picky reviewers), there is plenty of unique insights in this book to make it worth well more than the cost to purchase. The suggested study schedules and calendars - unique to each exam - are worth the price of the book alone. The additional 200+ pages are essentially "gravy", as the old saying goes - and with plenty more to offer any candidate (Pre-CFA, Level I or Level II). I am so glad I parted with a few dollars to purchase this book, and it has truly helped me shape my approach for preparing to climb this mountain.

a case of Amazon being too big for its own britches?

Buyer beware that you may not (and probably won't) get what you paid for. According to this product advertisement a cd is included, however none came with book. I emailed amazon concerning this problem and was informed that no effort would be made to remedy this situation (since it came from amazons warehouse) and If I was unhappy with purchase I would have to send it back. I'd say that is awful customer service which I hope isn't systemic with how amazon does it's business, certainly will give me pause when ordering anything from amazon directly and makes me think twice about renewing my prime membership. I'd say the book is ok, maybe a little outdated.

Great study of Bernard

Anthony Lane has written one of the most definitive and captivating studies on the work of Bernard of Clairvaux as it pertains to the Cross of Christ.

He starts by reminding the reader that most people tend to think of Bernard as simply a monk or mystic.. but not theologian. And yet, as Lane points out, Bernard made close to 700 references to the cross in his writings. Although Bernard himself didn't care for the word "theology," Lane clearly shows that he was a firm theologian of the cross by examining some of his sermons and his actual teaching on the cross.

Part 3 of the book, TEACHING OF THE CROSS, is the longest and most detailed, and chapter 10 of that section, CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS, is for me the best and most thorough.

Lane points out that Bernard didn't care for Abelard's teaching on the cross, but he's also honest to admit that Bernard flat out falsely accused Abelard of denying that Christ died to set sinners free.

Ultimately, Lane shows the reader that for Bernard, known primarily as a monk and mystic, the importance of the cross is seen.."precisely by the way he mentions it so often." (pg.50)

A very sexy week of training

Schooled to Obey is a delectable little tale about submission and, specifically, training for submission. It is fairly short, a novella in a series, and moves along at sex-novella speed. Which is: pretty fast!

This is the story of Lily, a young governess for a wealthy woman who has worked her way up from poverty to a respected, educated position. We meet her in the carriage on her way to meet her trainer, with her mistress Lady Montgomery and a fellow employee along. She is in literal heat, having been given a drug that increases blood flow to her most private ladyparts (for reasons explained later). She is in desperate need of relief, from what she does not yet know.

How she finds herself in this situation might bother some readers, but to me it makes Lily’s consent to be trained for a new type of service all the hotter: the children in Lily’s charge are old enough to attend boarding school, and Lily’s poor mother, who sacrificed so much to get her the education needed for a better job, is ill. Lily will face a diminished income, unable to provide for her mother’s care, unless – oh yes, unless – she accepts the offer from her mistress to trade a far more…personal…type of service, for the relocation of her mother to the estate’s grounds and a nurse to care for her.

Lily agrees, and not to worry – to say that she enjoys her days of training, despite herself, is an understatement. Lily has been brought to a male trainer of sexual servants, even though she is to be trained for “Sapphic Love,” as they called it then, because the very masculine Lord Harcourt is simply the best that there is at his particular skill. He commences to put Lily through the wringer, and what a wonderful wringer it is.

There is a LOT of sex in Schooled to Obey, and the scenes are very hot indeed. There is much plundering of orifices, in a good way. Ms. Ansevi is a talented writer, and she makes even the small scenes hot. Even in scenes which are familiar to those of us who’ve read a fair amount of BDSM erotica – such as Lily having to walk naked to the dining room for dinner for the first time, right in front of all the servants – we can feel Lily’s embarrassment and the newness of it all to her. Ms. Ansevi makes it feel vitally sexy.

My only quibble is that the story could use more *setting.* I know that this is an erotic novella, and as such the decision was made to emphasize action (and the action is excellent!) over setting and sensory detail, beyond the senses of the sex acts. I did sometimes feel like the characters were acting upon an empty stage – I knew little of what the bed chamber was like beyond it having a bed; I know nothing of what the mansion looked, sounded, or smelled like. And these things could have added another layer to Lily’s new experiences – a slower, more sensual description of her being ordered to navigate a garden maze, naked and blindfolded, could have been mind-blowing. Nor am I sure exactly *when* this story takes place – 1880’s England was different than 1830’s, or the 1780’s; that difference in tenor could have added a bit of depth, as well.

I don't know how much all of that matters to other readers; as I said, the sex IS fantastic. This novella was intended as a sexy romp, and in that, it truly, truly succeeds. I look forward to Book 2, in which Lily is returned to her mistress, trained, eager, and having learned MANY new things about herself. Or will that be in Book 3? I am anxious to find out. This book, however, was pure fun.

Well Written and Hot

To avoid repeating the blurb or giving away too much of the story, I’ll just say if you like BDSM erotica, this novella is hot. It’s also well written.
The characters all rang true, from Lily the ex-governess, to Lady Montgomery, to Lord Harcourt. Well, of course some of it seemed a little too over-the-top to really be true but after all, it is erotica.

In some places, Lily’s language didn’t seem to me like the sexual terms she would actually use, but then I’m not sure what someone from her place and time actually would say. Also, some readers might not like how she didn’t seem to have much choice in accepting this deal in the first place. Her mother was extremely ill and needed resources beyond what Lily had. Of course, this is fiction so that’s just a heads-up for those who would disapprove anyway.

I don’t think the cover matches the story. It’s too modern and the man looks too young and small to be Lord Harcourt.

The problems were very minor, though, and in my opinion not worth taking off a star over. I highly recommend this story for anyone who likes this type of read.

Michele Tracy Berger is associate professor in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. She holds adjunct appointments in the Department of Political Science and the Department of City and Regional Planning.

Invaluable Resource!

As a recent Women's Studies graduate during one of the worst recessions in American history, I had no shortage of folks bombarding me with that ever-present question "What on earth can you do with a degree in Women's Studies?" "Transforming Scholarship" helped me immensely as I transitioned from an undergraduate student out into the working world. This book helped me to mitigate many discussions with co-workers about why I chose Women's Studies as my major (one of the best decisions of my life) as well as why my background in Women's Studies made me a stronger, better counselor and advocate for social change. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in social justice, from both students in the beginnings of their undergraduate Women's Studies career, to those out already out in the working world. Michele Berger and Cheryl Radeloff provide an insightful, thorough and supportive guide on harnessing our feminist passions to change the world for both Women's Studies majors and non-majors alike. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The career counselor I wish I'd had!

If you're entering college and wondering what to major in, a recent graduate or a parent of a recent graduate, this book will help you chart the waters of an oft misunderstood major. Are you wondering how to explain your women's studies major to family and friends? My favorite chapter profiles six women's and gender studies graduates and how they are transforming the world. This chapter lists dozens of career paths that graduates have taken including HIV counseling, civil rights law, psychiatric nursing, non-profit work, writing novels or journalism and more. This book packs a punch of data and stories of real men and women that prove that this major equips students with critical thinking skills to tackle any field with perspective, consideration and above all - passion.

Doesn't reflect valuable feminisms like intersectionality

This book is essentially a crash course on how to convince the general public that a women's studies degree/minor/certificate is valuable by telling you how to market yourself if you have a WGS degree, get a job with a WGS degree, or convince your loved ones that a WGS degree isn't a waste of time and money.
Unfortunately I found this text to be annoyingly basic, and that might be fine for first year students just learning about feminism, but for anyone who has even a simple understanding of what WGS is as a discipline may find this reading aggravating. The content is reductive and often lacks a critical perspective. The authors did not present an intersectional lens on many issues, and it was painful to read for it's mainstream/whitestream understanding of feminism. Valuable issues like classism or ableism seemed to be left out entirely, and it placed a heavy emphasis on WGS as a gender-central--and only gender-central--discipline, often tacking on things like race as a single sentence in a side box or an afterthought at the end.
Totally a waste.
