This is by far the finest and most comprehensive work regarding custom rod building. The information is well organized and clearly presented. This text rivals many college textbooks as far as the amount and value of information to the rod builder. If you could only have 1 book on this subject, this would be it.

A great book for the rod builder, and serious anglers.

I just started rod building a year ago. I went on the internet and solicited some advise to get started. A gentlman recommended Dale Clemens book as the only book reference I would need. He spoke from 35 years of experience. I got the book and taught myself from the context.It is an outstanding reference, and I have gotten great compliments on my work so far.I consider him my mentor, though I have never met the man.I have yet to find another book which offers so much text and detail on the subject. There is nobody in my area that offers rod building instructions, making this book a real plus for me.I don't want to pour it on to thick,but this book is a great addition to your library whether you build one rod or a thousand. My compliments to Mr Clemens and my thanks for getting my dream started.

A magical, enlightening, and thought provoking book!

An enlightening thought provoking approach to advertising is found between the covers of this spell-book. It's creative and insightful throughout, and reaches beyond the "hard numbers" that often seem to dominate media buying, advertising and marketing campaigns, and news headlines. Roy pushes aside statistics and realizes that there are people just like you and me behind the numbers.
An advertising campaign is a link in a chain, only one part of the sales process. This book focuses both on creating a successful advertising campaign, as well as the other links in the chain including the creation of a pleasurable shopping experience that delivers the goods or services advertised. The Wizard presents lots of anecdotal tales and advice that relate to people and real world experiences. Chances are you will be able to personally relate to many of those contained within the book.
Some attention is given to advertising strategies in print, radio and television, and in what context and for what purpose they should be used. Much of "The Wizard of Ads" is a collection of feel good stories, however within each, is advice and insight into the world of sales, advertising, and people. As the author states, the reader will either love or hate the book. Ten steps to successful selling or advertising this is not, chock full of common sense approaches to reaching out and connecting with people who may become your customers it is.

Extraordinary thinking for communicators

In a way, the title of this book (also the nickname of the author, Roy Williams) is somewhat misleading. It suggests that only advertising mavens need read the book, but that is not so. This amazing writer/thinker has challenging insights for virtually anyone who communicates for a living, or who simply likes to communicate well. The short, one page chapters are perfect for quick reading on a regular basis. However, don't be surprised--the Wizard's writing is like Lay's potato chips...you can't eat just one. I would recommend it as a gift for anyone who communicates and wants to grow in that skill.

Great Book!

I just finished reading the Wizard of Ads, and was completely impressed with it on every level. My husband read it first and almost insisted that I read it as well. I'm glad I did. It was very informative and easy to read as well. Before reading this book, I was looking at the online reviews and noticed the one titled "Too Religious, Too Partisan, Yuck!" or something like that. After reading this book and learning a little bit about Roy Williams, I feel compelled to respond to his comments.

This book is in no way religious, and contains absolutely no political content whatsoever. The person who wrote that review apparently found out that Roy Williams once had lunch with a conservative Governor, and that he might be a Christian. He thought that reason enough to call Williams "creepy" and blast a book which it seems he never even read. Then in the middle of his review, this guy starts raling against the Bush administration and how he's responsible for boring TV ads during the Super Bowl. What??? This is obviously a bitter person who is just looking for reasons to slam people that might hold views different from his own. But in this case, the criticism couldn't be more unwarranted.

Roy Williams has personally trained executives from companies such as Proctor and Gamble, USA Today, and many others. The Wizard of Ads was named Business Book of the Year, and hit #1 on both the Wall Street Journal and New York Times business best seller list. You will find absolutely no political or religious activism of any kind in this book. What you will find is extremely valuable advice that, if applied, will make your business more profitable.

Great book so far, I will say however that one of the sides is printed awfully blurry. Its still legible but for nearly 200 dollars I expect perfection ;)

I actually enjoyed this book for class

From a student perspective (ie. having to write weekly 2000 word essays pertaining to this book), I have to say my prof made a wonderful decision to choose this book. The topics were very up-to-date and thought provoking. It's nice to discuss the future of robots, cell phone radiation, and have current heated topics in class. I'm sick of hearing about the abortion, death penalty, right to bare arms topics. Students over used those discussions in high schoool. Basically, I give an A+ for the interesting topics.
The book is also setup in a very student friendly fashion. Topics are given a 1 page summary relating the pros and cons of 2 writers opinions before plunging into their papers. After the 2 opinions are presented, there is also a page for points to ponder afterward. These two features proved very handy when having to do class discussions over something you read a week before. Skimming for quick recall can be a good thing!
Although I wouldn't have bought this book if I didn't have to, I believe it is an excellent choice for profs to use in class.

This book covers some major topics like Gentically modified food, electric cars and offers a pro/con on them from various academics, government etc. I needed it for a class, however, the material changes from year to year but it raises a lot of ethical and moral issues that we rarely consider.

As a required text for college, it was rather interesting

Normally, textbooks can be a bit of a droll when they are assigned as textbooks but in all fairness, I found this book to be rather interesting. It ranged across numerous topics involving sciences, innovations/dangers of technology and how society perceives them. It gives you two viewpoints from respected individuals, one is usually for the topic and the other is against it. The topics ranged from cancer induced by cellphones (aka radio waves), to environmental issues, and all the way to transhumanism. To be honest, it was a rather enjoyable read.

It may have a new Copyright date but it has old information. Take for instance, Chapter 5. Here's a quote ... Bond fund assets have grown from just $4 Billion in 1970 ... to $510 Billion at the end of 1992. Or how about Figure 6-2 in Chapter 6 that shows Money Market yields from 1983-1992. It doesn't appear that any information was updated past 1992 values. The 2015 Introduction goes into how "Bogle on Mutual Funds Became a Classic". Great! Congrats to the author and Wiley Publications. But I'm pretty sure you could get the same info from the old version. I don't own the old version but it kind of looks like I do - other than the intro and a copyright date. Really a disappointment.

Simple but brilliantly concepts

I first became interested in this title because of the positive review by Warren Buffett. There's so much hype in the investing field that you'll save hundreds of hours of wasted time and thousands of dollars in lost money by consulting a genius to separate the wheat from the chaff. It's not always an exciting, easy read but it's essential knowledge if you're investing or planning to invest in funds. Its simple concepts that take some mental work to understand. Those that make big money in individual stock investing normally invest a tremendous amount of time understanding their field AND the particular companies they're risking their money on. If you don't have the time or inclination to do this, mutual funds are one safe way to go.

For my money, your number one investment is in becoming valuable in whatever field you have a passion for. After enough money starts flowing and you want a relatively safe approach to investing and compounding excess funds (above what you need for a comfortable--not extravagant--lifestyle), Bogle explains the simple concepts for compounding your money over time. Don't take my word for it. Read the back page of the book for the brilliant investing minds that have given Bogle's ideas their stamp of approval.

Vice and Dom keep pushing each other away then pulling each other back. While Vice is a tough lady, Dom doesn't think she can handle his lifestyle. Vice just really wants a chance to try. It all comes to a head when Vice is captured. Will Dom and the gang be able to get to her in time?

The series as a whole gets better and better. The whole gang is here and the group just keeps growing....

Wish I had had this book 20 years ago!

I have been providing continuing education to healthcare professionals for more than 20 years. I have invested hundreds of dollars on stacks of books and few have been as helpful as this book. This book gave me clear focus on writing my objectives, organizing my content, determining what media to use, and hitching all of that to my post-test questions.

I've spent most of my career married to Bloom's taxonomy, which Ruth Clark acknowledges and incorporate into her book. But she relies more heavily on the work of Gagne, which I found helpful. All of her recommendations are clear and practical. I could read a chapter and almost instantaneously implement what she was suggesting.

This book helped me to realize the things that I do successfully, and enabled me to do more of those things! It also helped me to do less of the stuff that wasn't useful.

Although the theoretical underpinnings are very clear, the book is not a theory book on instructional design. It is for the real-life teacher or trainer, with plenty of practical implications. The book is highly well-organized, and written with an easy-to-understand approach. Clark gives multiple examples, exercises to reinforce learning, and useful resources in each chapter.

There are only two things I might have wished for that this book did not provide. First, the book is indeed limited to technical training. Since I do continuing education, I often had to make the leap in my own mind between how to teach a task (which this book explains well) and how to manage a healthcare management issue, which is what I teach. But since the title of the book clearly says "technical training", I could not realistically expect it to address my particular concerns. Second, I would have wished for more examples of how to use media and practice exercises, but on the other hand, a thorough treatment of those issues is probably beyond the scope of the book.

Overall, this book is extremely helpful for the expert, but I would say it's not too difficult for the novice to grasp. If the reader cannot make the leap between technical training and professional education, it might be disappointing. Most teacher or trainers are likely to find reinforcement for what they're doing right, and guidance on how to dramatically improve their instructional design.

Recommended for Novice and Intermedicate Technical Training Developers

Overall, I would rate this as a very good purchase, but it is a bit outdated for its time. It was published quite a while ago. I would say it is a very good book if you are not that well versed on Technical Training development. There are some excellent flow charts and information that would help even the most savvy developers.

Learn on mistakes of others rather than your own

Through stories and often funny examples the author describes basic principles of solving technical problems. This book can help a young engineer jump start their problem solving skills by learning on mistakes of other people rather than your own.

Some of the basic lessons in the book are: don't make assumptions, be aware that there are things you don't know, break up big problems into small chunks, localize problems, study and learn on yours (and others) mistakes. If you are an experienced engineer you will recognize all techniques described in this book as eventually everyone learns them from experience.

Bob Schmidt highlights that complications often arise from bad communication as people may mean different things by the same words. He includes suggestion on how to minimize occurrences of miscommunication in various forms of communication. He gives tips on how to improve your written communication by being more specific and removing subjective wording. He teachers how to be a better listener using "active listening" and providing feedback to the speaker by summarizing what you heard. This way the speaker can see if what you heard is what he meant. The author also talks about white boarding, block diagrams, and other visual aids for effective communication.

Many chapters are dedicated to troubleshooting as well as the most important question to ask "Did this ever work before" as it gives you a time reference for when the problems began. Knowing when the problem began can help figure out what changes could have caused the problem.

The author uses specific example to make the concepts less abstract, but everything Mr. Schmidt says generically applies to any complex problem and working with a group of people on a project.

I received this book from Kokomo Press to get feedback from a person with a technical background. I have been an engineer for a long time, the common theme in my every day work is that there is always a problem I need to figure out. I use the techniques described in the book every day. They help solve problems and keep you sane. I recommend this book to every new engineer.

Not just for engineers!

First of all my son is the engineer in the family, but as a dentist, business owner/manager and homeowner, I found this to be quite a useful book and a fun read. My recommendation is to read the introduction first, where the author gives an overview of the book and it's layout. The author wisely informs you what chapters to read to get the central story, so you don't have to read every chapter of this book; however you can scan through all the chapters for his insightful and amusing stories that start "once upon a time." Yes, some chapters can be more technical and hard to understand if you are not an electrical engineer, but again you don' have to read those chapters. The central theme of this book applies to all fields of engineering and I would argue all careers in general. Lastly I was also really struck by the last chapter titled Customers and Customer Service, as I was not expecting this to be in this problem solving book. I think this was a very smart add, very well written, and great for a staff meeting!

Although this book was written mainly as a practical adjunct for young engineers, I think you would agree that all of us face problems, whether that be at work or at home. This book is a universal problem solving guide for everyone that is very informative and witty. I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

I'm not an engineer: I'm a psychologist. But to me the guidelines and techniques presented seem applicable to many problem solving situations. The stories make this book fun enough to put it on my short list of holiday gifts to send. The approach to finding the source of a difficulty is well presented and broken down into steps I can manage.

Wow - it works, and it's easy!

WOW! Just WOW!

I've been trying to learn how to make good bread at home for a while, and have baked many loaves (about 3 5lb bags of flour worth), and have never been satisfied with the results, following directions and methods found elsewhere.

My very first attempt at Richard's methods has produced wonderful results! The dough is kneaded sufficiently in just a few minutes, has much better gluten development (without adding Vital Wheat Gluten), rises better... just better in every way than my previous attempts.

The included video is short, and I would say barely sufficient, but extremely helpful. No book can adequately describe the kneading method, and watching him do it on the video explains everything. I guess a picture is worth a thousand words after all.

If you want to make some good bread, get this book!

BEAUTIFUL FRESH BREADS

LOVE THIS BOOK: It's easy to weigh out the recipe, especially if you have a food scale. I use small paper bags for the flour as he uses.
I've had this book 3 weeks and already am the proud owner of 7 different flours in my arsenal. I'm amazed, how many , Different flours my local food store has. Today's bread has raisins,
Shallots, and hazelnuts. unusual and delicious at the same time. The book or the breads make great gift items.
Easy and concise instructions, and there's a video.

good book, DVD makes it much better

I have this book and "Crust" also by Bertinet and together they offer a somewhat unique, but effective, teaching method for making homemade breads. "Dough", the first book, is the one being reviewed but my comments also apply to "Crust" as the two books are essentially volume 1 & 2 of a bread making course.

Bertinet hails from Brittany and his northern French upbringing is evident throughout. He makes bread the way it's made in small French villages where the English influence predominates. The included short DVD's guide the reader through the basic mixing and kneading process that is somewhat different from the typical method employed in most bread books. Is it better? I don't think so, but it is another way of achieving the desired result and his demonstrations take place in a home (albeit, well equipped) kitchen rather than a commercial bakery or video production set so it's very reassuring to the novice.

The recipes themselves are good, but not great. And, like just about all bread making books they include a large percentage of breads that you probably won't ever make. I mean, let's face it, most home bakers want to make VERY GOOD baguettes/round loaves, a sourdough or two, good rye, some Italian loaves and a good pizza dough. Bertinet includes these along with numerous other breads and shapes, but then so does just about every other bread book out there. What makes these books valuable is the visual hands on experience one gets from the DVD's.

If you've never made bread (successfully) before these books would be a very good instructional tool and (with the included DVD's) worth the $50 they will run you. If you're a little more experienced I would HIGHLY recommend Maggie Glezer's "Artisan Baking". It's only available in paperback and there's no DVD's, but the content and photography is excellent. I would also recommend the chapter on bread in Julia Child's "The Way to Cook" as a excellent introduction to "french bread" making. It's also probably the best all around cook book you can buy.
