I highly recommend this excellent work by Mr

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a very well written account of the Salem Witch Trials and provides an incredible portrait of the complexities of the human soul. It's hard to believe that people allowed this travesty to occur. Are there people today who would fall into this type of situation? Absolutely.
That is what is so scary about the Salem Witch Hunt. We must continue to remember this event in order to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I highly recommend this excellent work by Mr. Miller.

The Crucible Review

I was assigned an English paper to be written on an author of the Literary Canon. A friend of mine recommended this book so I decided to read it. This book blew me away. The plot was engaging and there was never a moment when I became disinterested. The story of one girl turning a whole town against a group of wrongly accused people of practicing witchcraft blew me away. The whole time I was reading the book I was rooting for Abigail's manipulation and lies to be exposed. The one thing I liked about the characters in this book is they all had a driving purpose. It ranged from wanting the affections of a married man to trying to redeem ones self by saving a town from a group of evil women. I feel this a great educational book. It gives insight into the Salem Witch Trials and also Puritan religion. It has all of the drama and secrets of a great book while also teaching an important moral lesson. It shows how one lie can spiral out of control and have devastating consequences. After reading this book, I was interested in the characters real life stories and researched. This is one of those books that will keep you thinking after your read it about the characters, plot, and the sad ending. This book will always remain on my bookshelf for future rereadings.

A great read of the play by professionals

The L.A. Theatre Works' rendition of Miller's _The Crucible_ is an excellent demonstration of the actor's craft, as the tenor, pitch and emotive power of the play bring the characters to life. On the recommendation of Amazon reviewers, I used this for my English class (in addition to the Daniel Day-Lewis / Winona Rider DVD and a class read-around) to get a feel for the play and the various theatrical interpretations of the work.

As a previous reviewer noted, there are some differences between the audio version and Miller's script, but they are minor, and if one is not using the entire CD, a moot point. The performances are fantastic, and, as others have mentioned, it certainly gives life to the written word. Outside of a classroom, I couldn't recommend it, but as a teaching tool, it is first-rate.

About the Author
Ioannis Pappos is a management consultant and writer from Pelio, Greece. He is a graduate of Stanford University and INSEAD Business School, and has worked in both the U.S. and Europe. Ioannis contributes to blogs and magazines. He lives in New York City.

The battle of greed versus emotion...well-written and compelling.

Having spent the majority of my career working in the nonprofit field, it's hard for me to fathom the unbelievable excesses that those in the business world took advantage of in the mid-2000s, until the economy tanked. It sounds similar to the "greed is good" philosophy that pervaded the 1980s, and much as during that era, those who rose the highest often fell the hardest.

In Ioannis Pappos' Hotel Living, Stathis Rakis flees his seemingly ordinary life in a small Greek village to pursue college and a career in San Francisco, and then decides to attend a prestigious business school in Paris to obtain his MBA. It is there that he befriends a number of privileged expatriates from all over the world, whose lives of profligate spending and entitlement amaze him (while causing him some amount of envy), and he is a bit of a paradox to his friends. During graduate school, Stathis also falls—hard—for Eric, a liberal journalist with a strong social conscience despite his own privileged upbringing.

After graduation, Stathis takes a high-paying job as a management consultant, and finds himself spending the bulk of his time living in hotels, building relationships with the hotel staff, and moving from city to city as his job warrants it. When he isn't working, he's pining for Eric and trying to figure out where he fits in Eric's life, all the while both loving him madly and being angered by Eric's philosophy of the world. As their relationship waxes and wanes, Stathis fills his minimal amount of spare time uneasy in the social spotlight, trying to salve his emotional turmoil with copious amounts of drugs and alcohol. And his downward spiral is fueled by his heart, his greed, his ambition, and his conscience.

I found this book thanks to an ad on Goodreads (the cover blurb by Michael Cunningham caught my eye), and I found it tremendously well-written, part social commentary on this culture of excess and wanton lust and addiction, and part an emotional chronicle of a man who can't seem to overcome heartbreak, someone unable to return to the world he knows but not-quite-comfortable with the world he lives in. Ioannis is a fascinating, immensely flawed character, and his crises are painful to read about but compelling at the same time.

I could have done with a little more character building and interpersonal relationships in the book and less with the extensive details about the work that Stathis and his friends did, and at times the book introduced so many characters at once it was hard to discern who was whom, but Pappos created a fascinating look at a world that many got to experience, while not many came out unscathed. Stathis is a complex character I can't get out of my head, and I'd love to know if Pappos has given any thought to what came next for him.

Thoughtful, intense, and authentic.

Now here’s an incredible tale… of obsession, of class, of seeking, of losing, and maybe of finding. Told from Page 1 by a writer in masterful control of language and tone, Pappos’ novel about his decade as an up-and-coming consultant at Command (a fictional consulting firm) came on like the rush of a fast flood, sweeping me into the story with barely time to catch my breath. His sentences are compact, his descriptions succinct... telling without being overblown... exactly enough to let me, as a reader, find the fullness of what's being told. My mind felt very awake taking this novel in.

At times hilarious, at other times wicked, 'Hotel Living' is always entertaining. I’m often surprised how some writers have a 'great ear' for dialog — and Iannos Pappos is one of them. And he has an uncanny knack for remembering it, getting down all the elision and cadence of real conversation. Of course, 'Hotel Living' is full of zingers and sharp verbal exchanges. But it's all told in dense, smart writing that felt natural to the way people talk and the way the characters were as individuals. Authentic.

Edmund White likens this book to Trollope’s “The Way We Live Now.” Others compare it to “The Wolf of Wall Street.” For me, Pappos’ writing conjured up Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises.” A raw, intense story built around a figure I didn’t necessarily love (at first) or understand but nevertheless pulled me in, made me believe, made me care. Wonderful all the way.

A mesmerizing read full of suspense, insider trading, love, hopes, disappointments, desires, drugs, ups and downs of a life that may sound unreal at times yet you suddenly find yourself in "Stathis" at the most unexpected moment .... I could not drop it from my hand once I started and didn't want it to end. Recommend it to everyone.

My apologies to Britney

This book fostered a new understanding of my own fascination with Britney Spears and her fellow celebrity "trainwrecks." As an educated, cultured woman reading the news, I can't help but click on headlines that are nothing more than schoolgirl gossip. By the end of this book, I felt guilt, sorrow and ultimately empathy, which is what every tabloid article lacks.

Thought provoking

Excellent ; introduced me to names I did not know such as a Connie converse who my heart now bleeds for ; so many women ; how society Is unjust and if we are at all different labels us "crazy " I really enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would ; sometimes books seem preachy or take a dry note and become boring but this book is different. Its entertaining and fascinating. Highly recommended.

Large - Complete - Costly, but worth it

What is it? Hardback complete episode guide to the Simpsons. It has a sewn in book mark (the sign of high class real serious books). In fact, it might have been better as two hard back volumes.
Is it just a re-hash of the older published guides with some new stuff? NO! While there is some recycled stuff, there is new stuff which wasn't in the earlier guides, so even for seasons 1-10 there are new bits and pieces.
Besides the usual episode synopsis (1003 pages worth), writer-director-executive director-guest star credits, what else is there? I own the other episode guides as well and this makes my collection complete. My friends love to read through it and there is so much stuff in there I didn't know, it might take years before I read it all. I could only imagine what kind of effort went into making this book.. 1200 pages! If there was ever anything you ever wanted to know about The Simpsons, it's probably in this book.

Terrific book. Very up to date research on the Montreal Mafia or the "Mileu" which the book terms organized crime in Montreal. Great writing especially with the cat and mouse game of Desjardins and Salvatore Montagna. The book makes Montagna out to be a very mischievous criminal entrepreneur whose presence became known quick in Montreal. Makes me wonder if Montagna wasn't behind the murder of Nicolo Rizzuto Jr. Still interested to see how the Montreal Mafia scenario plays out.

Sachiko Umoto, born in 1970, graduated with a degree in oil painting from Tama Art University (Tokyo). In addition to her work as an illustrator, she also produces animation works for Usagi-Ou Inc. She is the author of An Introduction to Making Illustrations with One Pencil Workbook and An Introduction to Sketching with One Pencil Workbook (both published by MDN Corporation). Gorgeous packaging, no new material

Quarry's latest drawing book by Sachiko Umoto is a bit misleading. For those unfamiliar with Sachiko Umoto's books the Japanese illustrator has wrote 4 illustration books all showing readers how to draw in her cheery playful style. Each book focused on a topic - people, animals, plants, and using color.

For those readers hoping to get Miss Umoto's tips on a new topic they will be sadly disappointed. This book "let's draw" is a compilation book with excerpts from her first three books providing tips on how to draw people, cute animals and creating plants. For those who have the other books the material is certainly redundant. And that ends my criticisms.

Quarry Books have done something quite special with this book. The book comes packaged with a cute "let's draw" sketchbook. Both the paperback book and sketchbook are housed neatly in a gorgeous hardback binder that folds to fit neatly on your shelf or you could conveniently take along with you. For those who want to place this book alongside the previous Umoto books the paperback book can be slid out of the binder.

I don't think I would actually use the sketchbook as it looks too cool with the book. I imagine One could discard the binder and just keep the book and sketch pad. Whether I do that or not remains to be see.

High-Quality, Whimsical Illustration Advice

As has been noted, the packaging is gorgeous. I was surprised at the quality of the book and the accompanying sketch pad. They come in a binder that has an elastic band to keep everything together. The book opens horizontally and the sketch pad vertically so you can leave them in the binder and open both at the same time or take them out (I opted to do the latter but I store them in the binder). I added a photo that shows both books in the binder with the binder open.

The tone of the book is whimsical and, at times maybe goes a little over the top for some readers. I smiled to myself when the author suggested that I share my drawings with my friends and ask them questions like "Don't you think this is cute?" and "This is really funny looking, isn't it?". I can't imagine those words escaping my mouth or being written in a text message to any of my friends but your results may vary.

I like the pacing of the book. Sometimes she will be pretty technical and serious and then waffle back to exercises that are, as far as I can tell, totally silly. A good example is a page with the title "To render a pose, start with the skeleton" that tries to get you thinking about animals' skeletal structure when drawing them and then, a few pages later, you are matching cartoon footprints to animals.

I don't own any of her other books so the fact that this overlaps with them doesn't bother me (but is good to know!). If you are looking for something to teach you some fun new illustration skills and you don't own any of her previous books I highly recommend this set.

Fantastic help with illustrations!

Bought one and then received it for Christmas....beautifully made with easy to follow illustrations. I love the enclosed doodle pad for practice, too. I'm wanting to doodle better as I'm starting to use a Hobonichi A6 for 2015 and could use a little help. Great purchase!
