KEES DORST has a background in industrial design and philosophy. After a career in design practice, he has moved to academia where he studies the way designers think and work. He is now Professor of Design at the University of Technology, Sydney. He has published numerous articles and four books-most recently the book 'Understanding Design-175 reflections on being a designer'.

About the Author
Bryan Lawson is a Professor of Architecture at the University of Sheffield. He is however both an architect and a psychologist, which has enabled him to study the nature of the design process.

Surprisingly little has been written on this vast and immensely influential empire, known chiefly through the charismatic leaders, Chingis Khan and Kublai Khan.

J. J. Saunders's landmark book, first published in 1972, is a carefully documented introductory history of the rise and fall of the great Mongol empire. Saunders sets the historical stage with a discussion of nomad groups and cultures at the dawn of the second millennium, and then traces the rise of the Mongol conquests through the earlier Turkish expansion into Asia between the eighth and twelfth centuries. Beginning in the early 1200s, the Mongols led by Chingis Khan began their insatiable assault on all the kingdoms and peoples around them, erasing whole cities, killing entire populations, forcing mass migrations, and permanently changing the distribution of the world's major religions. The Mongols were finally checked along the edges of Europe and forced out of the Middle East by rejuvenated Muslim factions.

As Saunders concludes, one of the major legacies of the Mongol conquests was the transfer of intellectual and scientific primacy of the Old World from Islamic societies to Western Europe, paving the way for the Renaissance.

Starts strong but fades, although still worth it

This book written by J.J. Saunders was originally published in 1971 and its continued production speaks volumes for the interest in the subject matter that he is writing about. The Mongol conquests were a fascinating period of history, although for the people of the times looking out from their villages as the Mongol warriors charged in on their steppe ponies, terror was probably more apt. Saunders covers a significant amount of time and territory across his pages in a roughly chronological approach. He starts with a very thorough coverage of Chingis Khan (Ghengis Khan as it is often spelt) from his birth, through the ostracism of his family, then on to his bloody climb to power in not just Mongolia but across a lot of the Eurasian land mass. This coverage is excellent with much detail. There are family trees at the start of the book to assist the reader in understanding the linkages. Saunders analyses the military side of the Mongols and also discusses the religious aspect, especially as they change from their paganism to Islam.

His discussion about the Mongols being confused with the legend of the Kingdom of Prester John is an interesting aside. The Crusade era of the West coincided with the time of the Mongol conquests. Travellers brought back confusing tails of what religion the Mongols were and some Christians in the West believed that the Mongols were the lost Christian Kingdom under Prester John. They hoped that the Christian West and the Mongols could squeeze the Muslims that were between their two spheres of influence. While they were encouraged by the Mongolian attacks of the Muslim lands they were disabused of their theory of co-coreligionists when the Mongols proved equally happy to sack Christian lands.

Saunders has brought a complex subject into an enjoyable book but it seemed that the further that he moved from Chingis the less information there was about the Mongols. This despite the observations of Marco Polo in the court of Kubilai Khan. Timur or Tamerlane also gets scant treatment. Saunders in a way does obliquely justify this by asking how Mongol was Timur when he was more Turkic then Mongol on the surface. In addition, by that time Timur was just one of the Mongol leaders in the area of the formally united Mongol Empire. Significantly, while other leaders used Khan, Timur did not.

That said this is a worthwhile volume to have in your library if you are interested in the Mongols. I believe that it will appeal to both those with a knowledge already of the Mongols and those with a passing interest.

The eruption of nomadic warriors across Asia into Europe and the Middle East in the 1200s was only the greatest of many previous waves. Under Genghis Khan (Chingis, Jengiz, etc) and his immediate successors, the Mongols reached Germany and Croatia, Korea, Japan, Java, Burma, and Egypt. They built the greatest contiguous empire the world has ever known. It all collapsed within a century. The Mongols had some military geniuses as leaders in the beginning and were known for religious tolerance once things settled down, but for administration, they had to rely on others---Chinese, Persians, Turks, and even Europeans. The problems of succession did them in, as they have done so many other empires in history.
In this very informative work, Saunders acknowledges that he is trying the impossible. How to summarize and explain the vast panorama of events occuring over half the globe during 150 years or more ? He starts with Turkish precursors to the Mongols, then takes readers through the standard history of the Great Khans, Genghis, Ogedei, Mongke, and Kubilai. The Mongol Empire having broken up into four sections, we then get a history of each of the four, as far as is known---the separate khanates of Persia, Central Asia, Russia, and China. The older, more sophisticated societies of Persia and China soon shook off the Mongol yoke, absorbing their conquerors, while in Central Asia, the regime gave rise to Tamerlane, another bloody conqueror who left towers of heads in his wake. His death brought his sudden empire to a speedy end. Only in Russia, where disunity and confusion reigned, did the Mongol rule last 250 years.
While memorizing the various rulers, viziers, generals, and rebellious relatives (not to mention names of now-vanished cities) may prove a tough nut for any reader, Saunders' discussion of the ups and downs of three major religions---Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam in the context of the conquests---is extremely interesting and informative. Christianity had a major role in the Mongol realms, but without easy access to a source of finance or priests, and because Nestorian fought with Roman Catholic, Islam won over the rulers and people in time. The earliest Mongol defeats came from Islamic armies as well. Buddhism remained strong in China and of course, in the Mongolian heartland itself.
Not being an expert on Mongolian history, I can't say if this book is now outdated; if new information or analytic trends have replaced it. It seems to me, though, that it offers a solid introduction to the history of that people who burst out of inner Asia and changed the course of history. You certainly cannot understand the history of Russia and Europe, never mind Iran and the Middle East, without its subject matter.

Solid historic work

On balance it is a solid and readable compilation of primary and secondary sources on the subject. I liked the book and the author did a good deal of work to produce it. Unfortunately, there is a gross error right in the second paragraph of the book. Though, it is peripheral to the core material. Details of such a remote period of history are scarce, understandably so, and author stretches the book with dynamics of Islam, Christianity etc in Asia during the period. In itself a fasinating topic but NOT related to Mongol Conquests.

About the Author
Dana-Nicoleta Lascu was recently named 2005-2006 Fulbright Chair in International Business. Dana is an associate professor of marketing and chair of the marketing department at the University of Richmond, in Richmond, Virginia. She has a Ph.D. in marketing from the University of South Carolina, a Master of International Management with concentrations in marketing and finance from the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird), and a B.A. in English and French from the University of Arizona. She has taught international marketing at the University of Richmond for more than a decade and has published her research in international marketing in journals such as International Marketing Review, International Business Review, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Euromarketing, Journal of International Consumer Marketing, Journal of Teaching in International Business, and Multinational Business Review. She has organized a number of international conferences and published related proceedings (among them, the 1996 World Business Congress, in Bermuda, and the Sixth Conference on Marketing and Development, 1997, in Romania) and has participated as track chair, session chair, or conference co-chair in numerous other national and international conferences. She is on the editorial board of a number of international marketing journals. Dana Lascu worked previously as a simultaneous and consecutive translator (in English, French, and Romanian) for the Romanian government (the Central Committee if the Youth Union and the Ministry of Foreign Trade) and for the United Nations, Kigali, Rwanda, where the translated documents for the 1982 Round Table for International Aid. A Thorough Overview and Application Guide of NP

Not a bad book, considering it gives you the fundamentals of a variety of topics well covered in network programming. It is the only source of its kind I have found to address network programming without being almost exclusively tied to web development. I looked at it in light of it's C# orientation (because I'm a VB.NET developer), and found a lot of good basic coverage. Bewarned: If you are not an intermediate programmer, whether C# or VB.NET, it will take a little to get up to speed. The style is not bad - surprising, given the number of authors, and you CAN learn from it. I give it actually a 4.2-4.5, but I can't give it quite the 5-star rating. :-P

Back to basics

There is a classic series, "Internetworking with TCP/IP" by Comer and Stevens (1991) that describes the Internet of that time. Just before the Web burst on the scene. The books have C code that show how to perform network programming.

Well, this .NET book reminds me very much of that series. To good approximation, the authors have covered the same functionality. But now using the .NET environment as a development platform. The language is fully object oriented, unlike C. Much of the book is taken up with showing how the default libraries/classes that deal with networking.

If you have indeed used C and Comer and Stevens for networking, then you should appreciate what this book does. It gives a far richer vocabulary of prebuilt functionality, to handle those tedious and error prone low level manipulations. These libraries mimic what Java also offers for network programming. So if you are migrating from Java, there is much common ground here.

The book takes you back to the basics of network understanding. No pretty but vapid GUI to obscure the concepts. The UI, so to speak, is stdout and stdin and the filesystem. Before the Web and the browser metaphor became prevalent, this is how most of us programmed.

Another merit of the book is its coverage of IPv6. Still fairly new. But you can start familiarising yourself here. The authors also find space for brief explanations of cryptographic methods in .NET.

Must-have read for working with protocols in .NET

I was really surprised at the ease of reading with this book offered. As it seems to be one of the last remaining books left over from the old Wrox days, the "Pro" in the title would denote a very high level of material, often assuming a great deal of talent on the part of the reader and skipping the necessary introductory concepts and giving piecemeal code samples. This totally isn't that way at all. The book's back cover lists it as "Beginner/Intermediate" and it delivers on its promise.



Put it this way - I'm a lifelong web dev who's been doing more and more client/server work, and I got a ton of useful information for my projects in this work. Even as the book starts to get into material for which there is no easy way of describing, the authors don't deviate from using simple English and practical, plainclothes, repetitive examples to ensure the readers gets it before progressing to more in-depth topics.



Principal author Christian Nagel (whose writing I've long appreciated) starts out with a very thorough rundown of basic networking concept, the OSI model and the TCP/IP protocol stack, that any IT professional should peruse as a primer. He then presents the particulars of network programming in .NET, such as working with streams and sockets, and then drills down into individual protocols, devoting a chapter each to the major forms of network communication. The major protocols for communicating over networks and the Internet are all examined and expanded upon - SNMP, TCP, UDP, SMTP, HTTP, with helpful code samples. The book also briefs the reader on the importance of .NET Remoting on more than one occasion.



The book isn't one that's filled to the brim with code snippets you can instantly plug into your applications, but there are several very nice demonstrations and couple good sample apps (an FTP client, a multicast chat app, a simple e-mail utility, a picture viewer, etc.) that demonstrate the high-level concepts in the book's latter chapters.



In criticism, I found Chapter 5 - "Raw Socket Programming" was obviously written by a different author and uses a slightly different coding convention. While it's not an incriminating factor that should detract one from buying this book, it is something I would hope the editors would look to change for the next version, as the difference between the book's majority voicing and this one chapter - namely in its use of grammar and syntactical layout is a little too painfully obvious.



I also enjoyed the chapter introducing the reader to working with IPv6, although I thought it might have been better suited for placement further into the book or as an appendix, and not in Chapter 6. Additionally, I would have wished for more samples featuring using peer-to-peer networking architecture (there was one, I think), and a bit more meat to the discussion of .NET Remoting, perhaps in its own chapter.



But semantics notwithstanding, this is an outstanding title, being well-written and covering all the major considerations of .NET network programming with. This is easily a 5/5 work.

About the Author
Peter R. Kalb is the Cynthia L. and Theodore S. Berenson Professor of Contemporary Art at Brandeis University where he teaches modern and contemporary art history. He was the revising author of the Fifth Edition of the H.H. Arnason History of Modern Art and the author of High Drama: The New York Cityscapes of Georgia O'Keeffe and Margaret Bourke-White. His scholarship addresses issues in 20th- and 21st-century art and criticism and he serves as the Boston-based corresponding editor for Art in America.

Good textbook and a second edition will be terrific!!

I used this book in my undergraduate and graduate courses last spring. Kalb takes time to address contemporary issues in their historical context, which is refreshing and often lost in the more prevalent thematic versions of contemporary art history textbooks. I was able to address contemporary art as an art history class should and could create tests to see how well my students understood the artists and their works, along with conceptual, political, and historical issues. I have two criticisms: (1) His selection of artists needs to be increased. Although I was able to add many of the missing artists in my lectures, I was perplexed that Carrie Mae Weems and Lorna Simpson were missing. (2) Kalb also ignores significant aspects of photographic production from the late 1990s until today, specifically large-scale photography, like that produced by Gursky. I added a special day to expand upon contemporary issues related to photography, video, and performance, using outside readings. Despite my criticisms, the book was good overall, and I would recommend it highly as a textbook. Kalb can easily address my concerns in a second or revised edition.

Needs a ton of edits

Peter Kalb obviously has an issue with black contemporary artists because he doesn't mention any and for someone in his position, the oversight is embarrassing. I used this book for a Master's class Art since 1980 and it was a disappointment. Leaving black people out of the discourse is such a tired move.

Beautiful book, beautifully written.

This gorgeous book is for student, art lover or expert. Kalb has an astounding visual vocabulary that encourages active engagement with contemporary art. He is so attentive to the political, person, and societal meaning of the art of our times. This book is a far-reaching global study, but it is in no way a survey. The in depth attention to the carefully selected artists help the reader understand the multitude of issues surrounding art making, art selling, the meaning of art in all our lives.

About the Author
Spencer A. Rathus received his Ph.D. from the University at Albany and is on the faculty of The College of New Jersey. His research interests include treatment of obesity and eating disorders, smoking cessation, human growth and development, methods of therapy, and sexual dysfunctions. He is the author of the widely used Rathus Assertiveness Schedule and has written several college textbooks, including Psychology: Concepts & Connections, AIDS: What Every Student Needs to Know, Human Sexuality in a World of Diversity, and Childhood and Adolescence: Voyages in Development.
