People just don't want to consider that what they believe to be true might not be.

In reviewing other reviews of this book, it's apparent that those approving of it / objecting to it are mostly people who approve of / object to same-sex marriage. Which tells us little about the book's veracity or validity.

There are no truly neutral observers, simply variations in the degree to which one is prejudiced toward or against a particular position. This book is so heavily footnoted and appendixed, and Boswell seems to be at such pains to clarify exactly what he is and is not claiming, and why, that it is hard to believe he is not being intellectually honest, despite the fact he had a vested interest in promoting same-sex marriage. In short, Boswell gives at least the illusion of objectivity. This is enhanced by the fact that he builds his argument over many chapters, showing the social context into which church-authorized same-sex unions fit, rather than presenting documentation on just the unions -- a point which most of his detractors conveniently overlook.

The bias -- and carelessness -- of some reviewers is blatant. Kevin Davis states "...Boswell argues that rituals for the binding of two males (in Eastern Christendom) between the 12th and 16th centuries is evidence of the support for same-sex marriages in earlier Christianity. This is yet another example of a scholar misinterpreting historical facts in order to serve an agenda."

Anyone who paid attention while reading this book knows that the preceding statement is mostly untrue. (For example, the rituals existed for over 1000 years, and were in use in other parts of Cristendom.) Boswell explicitly states, repeatedly, that these same-sex unions were not, as far as the ceremony itself went, marriage ceremonies (which is why the book has the title it does), and he repeatedly shows how they differ (though the difference is not huge). He does, however, draw a distinction between what is written in a ceremony, and how people perceive the ceremony, suggesting that "the populace" might have viewed the union as a marriage (though not necessarily with a sexual element).

"matt" states "I would suggest that we all need to be careful in reading into texts and history what would make us feel better about ourselves." Agreed. But what about reading text and history based on what we currently perceive as true or false, right or wrong? matt conveniently forgets that "the church" systematically persecuted homosexual men and women for a thousand years -- and he's surprised when some of them are happy to find a bit of history that indicates the church at one time supported (if probably only unintentionally) their affectional preferences?

Which brings us to the issue of the essentialist / constructivist argument. Throughout the book, Boswell (it seems to me) leans in the constructivist direction, by attempting to interpret everything in the context of how the people of the time would have seen or valued it. This is far from trying to force a "modern" homo / hetero perspective on the analysis, which many critics seem to accuse Boswell of doing. (They, of course, do the same thing, but from "the other side".)

Those disagreeing with Boswell do so primarily by grossly misreading him, by taking his arguments out of context, or out of simple prejudice. They don't want to believe his interpretation might be correct.

There is another set of "facts" not discussed (or even mentioned) in this book. One is that homosexual practice between consenting adult males (I'm deliberately omitting paederasty, the love of young men, violation of slaves & prisoners, etc) is not unheard-of historically (qv, the pagan Celts). A berdache was often married to a man of the tribe (see Ruth Benedict), who presumably enjoyed sodomizing another male.

I don't believe Boswell is guilty of stirring up a hornet's next by means of bad scholarship or specious reasoning. He doesn't seem to be indulging in either.

As (the non-gay) friendly Professor Peter Schickele likes to say... "Truth is truth. You can't have opinions about truth." Boswell's interpretation of the historical evidence is almost certainly correct.

After reading this fine book, I wished that there was some way I could thank Boswell for such a revelation. Knowing that this would be impossible since he passed away, there is no way to thank him, but simply to praise his work, and tell other people about it. This study in same-sex unions performed throughout premodern European history debunks the notiont that marriage was only performed between a male and a female. The book presents astounding facts and information that has been suppressed, or misinterpreted by homophobe bias. In the appendices of the book, there are actual transcriptions of the same-sex marriage ceremonies used, in the vernacular, and translated by Boswell into English. This study was made all the more fascinating by the wealth of footnotes. When Boswell came across an ambiguous word that could mean many things in different languages, he includes that specific word written in its own language in the text. The appearance of these arcane languages in the text were beautiful, and one could call them "eye candy." There was writing from ancient Greece, some Slavic languages, and Hebrew. This novel is a major contribution to European history, and history in general, and being a college student and a future professional historian myself, I am glad to know that Boswell's presence graced the field of history, and has brought the craft of history to new heights.

Worthy of consideration, but...

The "but" is well expressed in the last two reviews here. The issue revolves around a specific translation question, and it's a debatable one.

Father Kurt's review comes closest to mine. It takes careful reading,and it has some significant problems, but it does present the issues fairly, and many of the objections made in recent reviews are addressed in the book's text. It may well be arguing a debatable proposition, but it is not "intellectual claptrap". Dr. Boswell makes a game effort to argue that his documents are speaking of something more significant than proerty transfers or normal "friendships". It's quite another thing as to whether he succeeds.

Evaluating this book as a historian, I fond myself at a loss for the lingustic skills to make much of a judgement on most of his texts. His argument, if he could maintsin the linguistic argument in the context in which the documents were produced, otherwise is well put. To repeat, it is not "claptrap".

However, there was one exception where I do have some ability to assess one of his documents: an excerpt in Latin from Giraldus Cambriensis' "History and Topography of Ireland".

Dr. Boswell lays out the Latin text, then gives his translation, and then explains his justification for translating it in the way it does. All of which is quite proper. I had a run at the Latin myself, and while, yes, using some standard definitons, you CAN translate it the way he does, it works equally well as a rite for the formal allaince of families or kinship groups. Since the social structure of Ireland at the time was based almost entirely on kinship groups, that's the way scholars of Irish history would translate it, rather than as a form of personal union between two people. Charitably, one might suppose that 12th century Ireland was not familiar ground for him judging from his other work, it wasn't), so while he seems to have misunderstood the context here, I wouldn't say that he got it wrong elsewhere. I did find a factual error in one of his footnotes (there is another modern translation of which he was apparently unaware), although it was the type of slip which happens fairly easily.

Simply for that reason I've given, I would not take this book as more than advancing an ingenious hypothesis, which remains at best unproven. Still, it is worthy of consideration...and as far as scholarly works go, it's pretty readable. That in itself is a virtue!

I bought this because my daughter finished the 3 disc Rosetta Stone Latin series and wanted to continue. It's a solid basic Latin grammar and textbook. Not cutesy, well organized, not religious, rigorous but not too complicated. Highly recommended!

Context and substance

I used Urban Environmental Policy Analysis for a general policy analysis course because it contains all the material necessary to teach students the policy analysis process, and it also takes a specific approach to the application of that process. Most other policy analysis texts are good on the process, but I've noted that students have a difficult time understanding how to apply policy analysis to a specific policy area. This text is more detailed on the analysis process than some of the general textbooks (giving both the economic approach, but also the more practical aspects), and also acknowledges the complexity of policy and the interconnectedness of social, natural, and economic systems. It is clear, understandable, and students responded more favorably to this text than to one of the most well known policy analysis texts available. I highly recommend this text, not just for an environmental policy course, but for general policy analysis as well.

Declan on yeah. He definitely wanted his mate Rachel but she kept fighting it. Until an attack on her best friend Chloe, with that Rachel had to accept everything. I can't wait for the next book in this series. I love Aline Hunters books, she rocks. She says you can read this book as a stand alone but in my thinking it is so much better to read Marked first and then Changed. That will let you understand everything that is going on.

Quick and enjoyable but nothing really happens in this series. If you enjoyed book 1 then you will enjoy book 2. Declan was very patient and sweet with Rachel and as usual the sex was hot. I'm looking forward to Shane's story.

I enjoy a good paranormal and this one didn't disappoint, it has a unique angle on wolves and mating and a mystery to keep you intrigued. I thought the characters were great Declan super sexy and Rachel is perfect for him, Declan is sweet and loving when he's with Rachel which I love. Rachel is my fav though she's tough as nails, no nonsense rough chick who just wants to be loved. I love these two characters together but like anything nothing is easy...Rachel is human and Declan isn't but the unimaginable happens and Rachel is lost in how to deal with her new life. Love the pack members especially Chloe and Jackson. Thought the story was very interesting kept me reading. Would love to read more total cliffhanger but I loved it.. ...4 stars

Thomas S. Kuhn (1922–96) was the Laurence Rockefeller Professor of linguistics and philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His books include The Essential Tension; Black-Body Theory and the Quantum Discontinuity, 1894–1912; and The Copernican Revolution.

A classic that is still very much worth reading

First, let me state the obvious - since Kuhn is talking about the philosophy of science, this is not light reading. That said, this book is as relevant as it was when it was first published - perhaps more so. Kuhn makes a well-reasoned argument that science is not an objective search for "truth," as many people believe. Instead, "normal science" is a problem solving endeavor, solving known problems by known methods. Science only changes the rules by which it operates (its "paradigm" - that over-used and often misused term in contemporary language) only when the current paradigm causes more problems than it solves. This is the real answer to any from any field who say, "The science is settled. There is no room for discussion." Those who make that statement need to re-read Kuhn and come to grips with the reality that all knowledge is inevitably socially constructed. If you read this in graduate school, it is worth revisiting. If you have never read it and you are ready for some deep thinking, dive in. You will find your horizons expanded, and that is a good thing.

If you've used the word paradigm, you must read this book.

I read this book almost 30 years ago and still consider it one of the most profound texts I have read. It gives genuine insight into fundamental beliefs. I still cringe when I hear TQM speakers talk about paradigm shifts. People don't change paradigms like a pair of glasses, they change them about as easily as they might change into a new set of eyes. Persons of accomplishment have gotten where they are by mastering skills that fit into their understanding of the world around themselves. Is it so difficult to understand that they would be hesitant to start looking at the world in a new way and deny the world that gives value to their achievements. This is not a book about psychology. It is a book about the unavoidable consequences a being logical creatures. You really do need to read this book

Re-readable, relevant, and revolutionary

Have you ever wondered what makes one scientific experiment considered a breakthrough while others simply place more pieces into the puzzle? Thomas Kuhn's book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, now in its 50th anniversary edition, withstands the test of time in its relevance to today's world of science. In addition to popularizing the phrase "paradigm shift", this book addresses the philosophy of science by questioning the assumption that scientific discovery is a linear progression toward the truth, as history might lead you to believe.

As the title suggests, this book thoughtfully presents a structure to scientific revolutions starting with an explanation of how "normal science" (versus great moments in science) operates to clarify an accepted model or pattern, which then serves to establish a paradigm. When the problem solving of normal science leads to anomalies that can no longer be explained within the established paradigm, crisis ensues. Finally, this crisis is resolved through the establishment of a new paradigm. Kuhn is clear that this structure of scientific revolutions is not a process leading toward the truth, but more of a process of evolution from "primitive beginnings." This book offers deep insight that applies beyond the field of science. You don't need to be a scientist to grasp the transformational thoughts presented by Kuhn.

About the Author

Dan Marom is the author of The Crowdfunding Revolution. Based in Tel Aviv, he has many years of experience with startups and serves as a strategic consultant to leading Israeli companies and public organizations. Richard Swart is director of UC Berkeley’s research program on innovative entrepreneurial finance and a recognized authority on crowdfunding. He has written on the subject for the World Bank, University of Cambridge and Nesta, among other organisations.�Dr Kevin Berg Grell was one of the first researchers to conduct extensive and deep analyses of the crowdfunding industry. His work has informed policy and regulatory decision making, and added a robust understanding of the adaptation of crowdfunding. Great book from actual industry leaders.

In an industry full of wannabes and inexperienced consultants trying to tech folks to "get rich quick" (and do it themselves), Dan, Kevin and Richard are actual industry pioneers that have written and compiled one of the, if not the best book on crowdfunding. Their guest authors/contributors are top notch as well. Highly recommended.

Great book. The book gives a great overview of some of the potential directions crowdfunding/crowdsourcing/etc. could take. It gives many examples of innovative ideas and methods we will all be exposed to in the future, and how the various actors try to use them.

I am thankful to have stumbled across an article that lead me to this book. After reading the first chapter I knew my money was well spent. Ram Castillo breaks down career success into 5 parts. He explains how to develop and leverage each part in an easy to read and straight to the point manner. His passion for design and for helping others is palpable. I only wish he had written this book 6 years ago, then I would already have the design job I want; at least now I am on the right track. This should be required reading for any new or struggling designers.
