Wannier vs. Goodstein vs. McQuarrie

I've come to acquire a taste for statistical mechanics. The first several times I ran across Gregory wannier's "Statistical Physics" I was very much unimpressed and put off by it, despite its treatment of topics of special interest to me. Now, having completed much of Donald McQuarrie's "Statistical Mechanics" and much of David Goodstein's "States of Matter", I am finding to my utter amazement that Wannier's book is *really* good and complements the other two (superb) texts quite well. Perhaps this is just a matter of acquiring taste for his approach, but equally likely it's a matter of having read McQuarrie and then Goodstein first, and in that order. With that experience under my belt, "Statistical Physics" has shined with lucidity and simplicity, and it's been a real joy to read.
Part of this may be due to the nature of statistical physics. To begin with, it is not a subject oriented around being able to produce quick numerical results- that is, statistical physics is not just back-of-the-envelope calculation. Instead, a leisurely conceptual approach gives more insight into its deep and intricate structure, and all three books mentioned here provide that and convey an appreciation of this beautiful subject. The wise reader will read it at his own unhurried pace.
Wannier classifies the chapters and sections of "Statistical Physics" into three types appropriate to the solid undergraduate, graduate and advanced graduate/post doc levels. So it may not work well as an introduction to the material at any of the levels.
Wannier has the honesty to treat the second law of thermodynamics as a useful but unproven principle as opposed to dogma, and devotes three complementary chapters to it on its statistical justification, its classical, axiomatic justification and its applications.
I also like the more generalized treatment which includes a nonequilibrium model in kinetic theory in addition to the usual treatment restricted to the equilibrium case.
Most of the mathematics occurs in the context of profuse prose, so only rarely is the reader left with too much mathematics connected by too few words. The writing is almost always clear.
I highly recommend the book to those with sufficient background, time and inclination to reap the great rewards it offers. P.S. If you still don't like Wannier's book, you might do well to look at it again in a few years when you have the experience given by reading other books.
Prerequisites: courses in thermodynamics, classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and an introductory course in statistical mechanics, statistical physics or statistical thermodynamics.

About the Author
JC Trewin was a stage historian and drama critic. Author of 50 books and editor of 50 more, he was Literary Editor for the Observer newspaper. He lectured on Shakespeare in Britain, Europe, and North America, and was President of the Shakespeare Club of Stratford-upon-Avon. Professor Stanley Wells is Chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace trust and globally recognised as a leading authority in the field. He has lectured worldwide on Shakespeare, he is also vice-chairman of the Governors of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and a member of the board of directors of the Globe Theatre. He has written many books and is a frequent reviewer of Shakespearean productions for the Times.

A Useful Pocket Sized Resource - Despite the Small Font

I still use my Simon and Schuster Pocket Companion to Shakespeare's Plays (1989) to check on the date of a particular play, to glance over a synopsis, or the find the name of a character that I have forgotten, despite my increasing use of Wikipedia now days.

The plays are arranged chronologically. (We should be thankful for those meticulous Victorian scholars a century ago that helped create the now accepted sequence of Shakespeare's works. In fact, there is a 35-page biography section that briefly outlines the contributions of key Shakespearean actors, directors, critics, and scholars.) There is small section on Shakespeare's poetry and sonnets.

Three or four pages, sometimes more, are devoted to each play with sections titled Synopsis, In Performance, In Other Terms (e.g., films), and Chief Characters.

There are two brief sections on major Shakespearean Theatres and Shakespearean Festivals. The Select Glossary on Shakespeare's English (roughly 900 terms) might prove useful as a study guide, although I typically rely on footnotes and my favorite dictionary when reading for pleasure. There is even a genealogical chart for the House of Lancaster and the House of York.

The Simon and Schuster Pocket Companion to Shakespeare's Plays is not without defects. Most noticeably, the font size is small to the point that good lighting is essential, especially if you are old enough to have read a good many Shakespearean plays more than once.

As the forward indicates, this guidebook targets readers developing a kinship with Shakespeare's works. Scholars and theatrical professionals will likely require more elaborate studies, but for many readers this small book will prove most satisfactory. And it will fit in a pocket.

Newer Edition: A fully revised 2005 edition titled The Pocket Companion to Shakespeare's Plays is available from Mitchell Beazley Publishing. The revisions were by Stanley Wells; the forward was written by Dame Judi Dench.

Resolving "undermanagement" issues require hands-on techniques

Managing up does not come naturally. Tulgan's new book promises and delivers in its hands-on "step-by-step" approach. Like most successful business people, I've attended dozens of seminars and read hundreds of business related books. So often we are left with that nagging feeling of uncertainty as to "what do I do next?" In this dynamic and insecure economic environment, it's refreshing to have a step-by-step process to maintaining clear-cut goals and expectations, maximizing resources (yours and your managers), receiving appropriate feedback and garnering the rewards for your successes in a business environment that's wringing more and more out of each of us (from the top down). Working more effectively with managers requires taking a modicum of control and Tulgan provides techniques for symbiotically and systematically achieving a high level of performance through this relationship.

Common sense for every employee

Most workers would concede that it's not only supervisors who need management expertise, but few would be able to articulate the skills, steps, and--most important--attitudes it takes to manage their own bosses. Bruce Tulgan has concluded that the nationwide "undermanagement epidemic" goes both ways, and that it is incumbent on rank-and-file workers to learn to help their supervisors help them.

From the manifesto of its title to its snappy practical suggestions ("Feed this big ego a big snack"), It's Okay to Manage Your Boss is empowering, reassuring, and on point: Every employee needs and deserves to have priorities and expectations spelled out, and, in the absence of the mythical perfect boss, every employee will sometimes--or very often--have to take the initiative to ensure that they are. Similarly, every employee may sometimes have to help her boss track her progress and reward her accordingly. This is not a bad thing, Tulgan explains; this is the way to become the best employee one can (and, coincidentally, to prepare for greater workplace responsibility).

Through all this modern empowering language shines the rock-solid common sense of our grandparents' generation: Know what you're doing, apply yourself, pay attention to the details, and be polite. In other words, respect the work, yourself, and the people who do it with you.

Address the new atheists' arguments head on, and it's dead on

This book address the new atheists' arguments head on, and it's dead on. Copan's writing is clear, lucid, and readable. He has divided up chapters into a handful of pages (thought the font is rather small), so each "question" or "argument" is addressed quickly yet sufficiently.

The title of the book, "Is God a Moral Monster?" obviously is a rhetorical question. No, He isn't. But, why do new atheists frame God as such a being? In a nutshell, because they use out-of-context phrases, expressions, and impressions from the Bible. With Copan's further explanation on cultural backgrounds, context of events, and linguistic nuances, readers are able to grasp the deeper and more caring heart of God the Father.

I have not finished reading the book, bur the first 9 chapters or so have been satisfying. A good book for those who know the short answer to the question, but who need more detail and, thus, confidence/evidence.

If you are having trouble with all the death and destruction recorded in the Old Testament, read this book

Copan provides a very readable, concise look at many of the issues Christians, and non-Christians, have with all the death and destruction that seems to be ordered by God in the Old Testament. Copan takes a close look at the passages, at the culture of the times, at the history of the region, and brings a clear picture of what God was doing at that point in the history of the Hebrew people, the region, and the world. Everything has a purpose, and Copan provides a good over view of understanding God's purpose in the destruction in the ancient world and the documentation of such events in the Holy Bible.

Reading any ancient text, particularly one thought by so many to be divinely inspired, must have sound hermeneutics otherwise spurious conclusions (by New Atheist, Muslims, and some Christians) abound. Much of the biblical world is so very foreign to present day Western thinkers. The value systems are as far a part is east from the west, no pun intended. An old midrash of the Psalm that reads as removing one's sin as far as east is from the west comes to mind, the net is that this is not measured in distance, but in degrees of one turning their back on something. Many westerners don't relate to a shame/honor culture where the individual is never as important as the group, and the group tries to protect the individual. This book was helpful for me to turn towards the east again, albeit not sin related, and consider different ways of thinking and interpreting the Hebrew and New Testament scriptures. Thank you.

Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) TEST CHANGES:

The SHSAT is changing! If you are taking the Fall 2017 SHSAT Exam, you should be aware of the following changes so you can properly prepare for the exam. The old SHSAT test comprised of two sections: verbal and math. The verbal section included five scrambled paragraphs, followed by ten logical reasoning questions followed by 5 reading comprehension passages. The math section included 50 multiple choice questions. The time limit for the exam was 150 minutes.

So... what are the new changes you should be aware of?

• The new time limit for the SHSAT exam is now 180 minutes. (30 minutes more than the old SHSAT exam)

• NO MORE SCRAMBLED PARAGRAPHS.

• NO MORE LOGICAL REASONING QUESTIONS.

• Verbal section is renamed to the English Language Arts (ELA) section.

• There are 57 questions per section and only 47 out of 57 questions in each section will be scored. 10 questions are field test items which will not count toward the students score.

• The ELA section will include 20 revising and editing questions along with 6 reading passages.

• The math section will include 5 grid-in questions

• All multiple choice questions will have 4 answer choices instead of 5.

I purchased the first edition of the book in September and my daughter received admission into Stuyvesant High School for Fall of 2016. I am writing this review for two reasons.
1)My daughter found the practice exams in this book to be very useful and we are excited for her to start Stuyvesant High School.
2)Her brother will be taking the exam next year, and we just purchased the second edition and I have to say I am very happy in what they are offering. My son wants to attend Bronx Science because he is interested in one of their programs. Evidently, Argo Brothers offers free live test support, so I decided to fill out their form on the website regarding a few questions my son needed further help in, and I received a call from Michael, who is a tutor for this company literally within 20 minutes, and he guided my son through those questions. I must say I am very impressed they have this support feature.
If you’re preparing for the specialized high school exam, this book is a no brainer, hands down one of the best books to use to prepare for the shsat exam. I hope my son will be able to score high enough for Bronx Science, I had him start early because this exam is very intensive.  I would also recommend using the live support feature, if anyone has any difficulties on a problem.

This book is great for its price

This book is great for its price. My brother has been using this book and I can tell he is becoming far more confident than he was just a few months ago. This is certainly not an easy test to do well on! The practice questions in this book are great; actually some of the questions really make you think. If you want a mix of realistic practice exams get this book and probably the Kaplan’s. Barron’s book is way too easy and is not realistic on the level of difficulty.

SPSS has changed - that is a good thing

After finding myself back in school (after 30+ years) I needed to relearn SPSS. The last time I used SPSS, it involved entering commands onto punch cards, sending them thru a card reader and waiting for output.

This book is about the modernized version of SPSS, and steps you thru the process of using recent versions of the software. It is not particularly useful in learning statistical analysis, but along with the Introductory book it is very helpful in navigating the new SPSS.

Does a nice job of facilitating a solid fundamental level of SPSS skill (using dialog boxes - not much in way of syntax). I use as a supplementary text in a grad multivariate data analysis class I teach. Not a fan of the mediation chapter as I find it more helpful/useful to students to teach Baron and Kenny approach utilizing regression; but, overall the content is helpful to those with scant SPSS/data analysis background, and students seem to appreciate the straight-forward distilling of fundamental concepts and SPSS skills the book presents.

Super friendly to use, but I don't like that the workbook is in the back and I continually had to reference to it. Wished it had been within the chapter.

John D. Caputo is David R. Cook Professor of Philosophy at Villanova University. He is author of Radical Hermeneutics: Repetition, Deconstruction, and the Hermeneutic Project; Against Ethics: Contributions to a Poetics of Obligation with Constant Reference to Deconstruction; and Demythologizing Heidegger.

Captivating Read

Jack Caputo does a beautiful job of presenting clearly and precisely both Derrida's own positions as well as those that are "religious." I find myself in awe of his reconciliation between deconstruction and the religious. I recommend this to anyone who has read Derrida, especially if you also enjoy Levinas. This will undoubtedly give you a new way to consider the religious.

A faithful reading is a risky reading . . .

In this exposition of Derrida's recent writings, Caputo continues his work of making the trouble-making tools of deconstruction generally available. The clarity of his presentation is matched by his playfulness. Theme by theme, he teases out the revolutionary possibilities of Derrida's "religion," freeing words and phrases from jargon and obscurity. This book offers the gift of the relevance of Derrida for "faith." Caputo's own "Edifying Divertissments" are michieviously beautiful.

Anyone out there heard of the Wholly Other?

Caputo is perhaps too academic and single-minded for the average reader, even one who knows all about differance, a word almost on every page, as the summing up of Derrida in a word. If this word is unfamiliar to you, forget this book. If you at least know that it is a neologism combining difference and differing, you still have to make your way through the critique of Levinas in the next chapter. I prefer simply to read Derrida in the original in his piece 'contra Levinas'. If this controversy is new to you, this book won't help dispel it since Caputo is hooked on deconstructing the way to the Wholly Other. Briefly Derrida tries to dissociate (the highest) choice from the usual metaphysical predicates (autonomy, consciousness) and think of it as the other's decision in me. Let's capitalize that Other. In other words, we are passive receptors of the Other's message.
