Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas, by Natasha Dow Schüll

Recent decades have seen a dramatic shift away from social forms of gambling played around roulette wheels and card tables to solitary gambling at electronic terminals. Slot machines, revamped by ever more compelling digital and video technology, have unseated traditional casino games as the gambling industry's revenue mainstay. Addiction by Design takes readers into the intriguing world of machine gambling, an increasingly popular and absorbing form of play that blurs the line between human and machine, compulsion and control, risk and reward.

Drawing on fifteen years of field research in Las Vegas, anthropologist Natasha Dow Schll shows how the mechanical rhythm of electronic gambling pulls players into a trancelike state they call the "machine zone," in which daily worries, social demands, and even bodily awareness fade away. Once in the zone, gambling addicts play not to win but simply to keep playing, for as long as possible--even at the cost of physical and economic exhaustion. In continuous machine play, gamblers seek to lose themselves while the gambling industry seeks profit. Schll describes the strategic calculations behind game algorithms and machine ergonomics, casino architecture and "ambience management," player tracking and cash access systems--all designed to meet the market's desire for maximum "time on device." Her account moves from casino floors into gamblers' everyday lives, from gambling industry conventions and Gamblers Anonymous meetings to regulatory debates over whether addiction to gambling machines stems from the consumer, the product, or the interplay between the two.

Addiction by Design is a compelling inquiry into the intensifying traffic between people and machines of chance, offering clues to some of the broader anxieties and predicaments of contemporary life. At stake in Schll's account of the intensifying traffic between people and machines of chance is a blurring of the line between design and experience, profit and loss, control and compulsion.

Review
Winner of the 2013 Sharon Stephens First Book Prize, American Ethnological Society

Honorable Mention for the 2013 Gregory Bateson Prize, The Society for Cultural Anthropology

The Atlantic Editors' "The Best Book I Read This Year" for 2013, chosen by senior editor Alexis C. Madrigal

"Natasha Dow Schll, an anthropologist at MIT, has written a timely book. Ms Schll has spent two decades studying the boom in casino gambling: the layout of its properties, the addicts and problem gamblers who account for roughly half its revenue in some places, and the engineering that goes into its most sophisticated products. Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas reads like a combination of Scientific American's number puzzles and the 'blue Book' of Alcoholics Anonymous."--Christopher Caldwell, Financial Times

"Addiction by Design is a nonfiction page-turner. A richly detailed account of the particulars of video gaming addiction, worth reading for the excellence of the ethnographic narrative alone, it is also an empirically rigorous examination of users, designers, and objects that deepens practical and philosophical questions about the capacities of players interacting with machines designed to entrance them."--Laura Norn, PublicBooks

"Schll adds greatly to the scholarly literature on problem gambling with this well-written book. . . . Applying an anthropological perspective, the author focuses especially on the Las Vegas gambling industry, seeing many of today's avid machine gamblers as less preoccupied with winning than with maintaining themselves in the game, playing for as long as possible, and entering into a trance-like state of being, totally enmeshed psychologically into gaming and totally removed from the ordinary obligations of everyday life. . . . The book offers a most compelling and vivid picture of this world."--Choice

"If books can be tools, Addiction by Design is one of the foundational artifacts for understanding the digital age--a lever, perhaps, to pry ourselves from the grasp of the coercive loops that now surround us."--Alexis Madrigal, The Atlantic

"Natasha Schull's Addiction By Design is fascinating, absorbing, and at times, a bit frightening. . . . Schull's work will have wide relevance to many audiences, including those interested in technology studies, media studies, software studies, game studies, values-in-design, and the psychology and sociology of addiction and other technologically mediated behavioral disorders."--Hansen Hsu, Social Studies of Science

"Original, ambitious, and written with elegant lucidity, Addiction by Design presents us with a narrative that is as compulsive as the behavior it describes. The book repositions debates in the field of gambling and will surely become a classic text in studies of society and technology."--Gerda Reith, American Journal of Sociology

"Based on fifteen years of ethnographic work, Addiction by Design is an ambitious and thought-provoking book that challenges the neoliberal ethos currently governing the way in which governments and professionals think about gambling addiction."--Kah-Wee Lee, Technology and Culture

"A handbook on regaining our proper orientation to the world. Schll's book offers a grim warning about the ways others can deliberately cut us off from natural and supernatural joys."--Leah Libresco, Commonweal

From the Back Cover

"A stunning portrayal of technology and the inner life. Searing, sobering, compelling: this is important, first-rate, accessible scholarship that should galvanize public conversation."--Sherry Turkle, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, author of Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other

"A fascinating, frightening window into the world of gambling in Las Vegas and the technological innovations that deliberately enhance and sustain the 'zone'--the odd, absorbed state for which extreme machine gamblers yearn. An astute and provocative look at addiction and its complex moral, social, and emotional entanglements."--T. M. Luhrmann, Stanford University

"At the heart of Schll's book is the interplay between the players and the machine; between the players and the machine manufacturers; between the players and the math program; and between the players and the 'zone' that the machines help produce. A tour de force that changes the dialogue on gambling addiction."--Henry Lesieur, author of The Chase: Career of the Compulsive Gambler

"Schll's clear and dramatic writing style is itself addictive. One is drawn into the ways in which the interactions among the different stakeholders lead to players' experience of being drawn into a 'zone' where they remain until all resources are gone. This is a must-read narrative that points to the many variants of screen addiction possible today."--Don Ihde, author of Bodies in Technology

"This gripping, insightful, and poignant analysis of machine gambling offers a kind of object lesson in the intensified forms of consumption that computer-based technologies enable. An exemplary case of the way in which close, critical investigation of specific sites of capitalism can provide a deeper understanding of both intimate experience and widespread socioeconomic arrangements."--Lucy A. Suchman, author of Human-Machine Reconfigurations

"Schll offers a provocative and important study of the imperative some people feel to lose themselves in a machine. The ethnography is rich and deep, shedding original light on the significance of addiction and gambling in American culture. The story told in the book is absolutely riveting."--Emily Martin, author of Bipolar Expeditions

"In the zone" or "zoned out"?
By Brenda Jubin
Natasha Dow Schll's Addiction by Design is one of the most compelling books I've read in the past few years. Not because I was ever captivated by slot machines or video poker. In my entire life I lost a total of $5 to a slot machine and, quite frankly, even then I didn't consider the experience worth anywhere close to $5. But the experience has changed, thanks to technology and mathematical algorithms; it has a deeper hook.

Schll, an associate professor at MIT, argues that addiction to machine gambling stems from the interplay between the gambler and the machine. Drawing on fifteen years of field research in Las Vegas and extensive interviews with both designers and addicts, she shows how the "duty to extract as much money" as possible from customers and the desire to play for as long as possible combine to produce a recipe for potential addiction.

Slot machines have come a long way from the coin-fed mechanical one-armed bandits. They now use video technology, which speeds up play significantly. On average, pulling a handle resulted in 300 games an hour. Video poker players can complete 900 to 1,200 hands an hour; the rate is similar on video slots. (p. 55) The financial flow in casinos has also sped up. Players no longer have to carry around heavy cups of coins or wait for payouts. Instead, casinos are "cashless." Moreover, players who run out of money can easily tap into their checking accounts, credit cards, or debit cards--in numerous jurisdictions right from their machines--to keep on going.

Early on programmers devised techniques "not only to distort players' perception of games' odds but also to distort their perception of losses, by creating `near miss' effects. Through a technique known as `clustering,' game designers map a disproportionate number of virtual reel stops to blanks directly adjacent to winning symbols on the physical reels, so that when these blanks show up on the central payline, winning symbols appear above and below them far more often than by chance alone." (p. 92)

Increasingly, mathematicians are designing games that match "math with markets, player types with schedule types." (p. 109) There are two basic types of players--jackpot players who prefer "high volatility, low hit frequency" games and escape players (play-to-win-to-play players) who prefer "low volatility, high hit frequency" games. "On both machines you end up in the same place, which is zero. ... It just takes longer to get there on the second one." (p. 111)

The gamblers that Schll interviewed were escape players. As a casino executive said, "What they really want to do ... is to play and forget and lose themselves. ... [They want to] get in the zone" where "their own actions become indistinguishable from the functioning of the machine." (pp. 170-71) This zone is not a happy place. Unlike Csikszentmihalyi's flow, which is "life affirming, restorative, and enriching, ... repeat machine gamblers ... experience a flow that is depleting, entrapping, and associated with a loss of autonomy." (p. 167) It is decidedly worse than T. S. Eliot's melodramatic description of playing solitaire as "the nearest thing to being dead."

Schll's book is masterfully crafted; it "hooks" you to keep reading until there is nothing left to read. You come away, however, enriched, not depleted. The interviews are gripping, the analysis is sophisticated, and the topic is important--not least because we are all being bombarded with technology that enables us to be "in the zone" in a host of deleterious ways.

Interesting information, but works better as a dissertation than a book.
By J. C. Stroissnig
I have no idea what to rate this book because one, I can't finish it, and two, my beef isn't with the contents per se.

I'm shocked that this book received nothing but 4 and 5 star reviews. Must've all been by academics. I'm trying, for probably the 5th time, to read some of this book and I just can't focus. It's written like a thesis paper. It reads like a thesaurus exploded all over a psych degree to impress an english professor. I was excited to get this book after hearing an interview on a radio program about it. I am researching design manipulation (for practical reasons, not academic) and this was absolutely perfectly the type of thing I was looking for.

The concepts are simple enough, and quite fascinating, but the writing is just awful. I'm not normally one to be so blunt (nor mean), but I can't help it, mostly because I'm shocked that I seem to be the lone voice. Here is a very typical example of the writing:
"To ignore the continuum of problematic experience among gamblers is to minimize the extent of the phenomenon, they suggest. Departing from the dominant medical emphasis on the psychological, genetic, and neurophysiological factors that might predispose an isolated subset of individuals to "maladaptive gambling behaviour," they seek to understand how commercial gambling activities and environments might create the conditions for - and even encourage - such behaviour in consumers."

I literally just turned to a random page and wrote down the first thing I saw. Do I understand every word in those two sentences? Sure do. Do I understand what the author is trying to say here? Sure do. Is it enjoyable to read in the slightest? Sure isn't. It reads like a dry textbook as opposed to a book you read out of want. It's extraordinarily clinical. Yes, it's supposed to be a book about findings, not opinions. That's no excuse. You can write about facts and findings in a far more enjoyable, warm, readable way. This book screams 'academia'. For scholars, by scholars. I haven't been in a scholarly environment in 20 years, and nobody I encounter (or have ever encountered) speaks like this so I have to actually "think" about what I'm reading as opposed to just reading and absorbing. If your first reaction to that is "If you have to "think" to understand these words, then maybe you're not smart enough to 'get' this book" then this review isn't for you. It's not a matter of intelligence, it's a matter of familiarity. Unless you're in this niche world where people communicate like this, it won't be a natural read. You'll find yourself reading the same sentence 3 or 4 times. Not because you don't know what the words mean, but because your brain quickly glazes over and you can't focus.

great book on machine-human interaction
By Rebecca L. Tushnet
The best book on the techno-human intersection I've read in a long time, and also highly depressing. If you've read Temple Grandin on humanely getting cattle through the slaughtering chutes, you might recognize the same spirit in this depiction of best practices for casino design: "`passageways should keep twisting and turning through gradual, gentle curves and angles that smooth out the shifts in direction.' Aisles leading into gambling areas `should narrow gradually, so walkers do not notice the approaching transition until they suddenly find themselves immersed in the intimate worlds of gambling action.'" The games themselves are designed to create a false sense of efficacy in the gambler--players who feel they can have an effect on outcomes will keep playing longer. And they are designed to create a false sense of the odds of winning and the magnitude of wins: reels are programmed so that there are fewer opportunities to win than it looks like there should be based on the number of symbols on the reel; reels are programmed to stop so that it often looks like there was a near miss (and regulators ignored the deceptive potential, because it was good for the industry); "teaser" reels display before you play with more winning combnations than actually available; and then payoffs less than the original bet are rewarded with "winner!" notifications, creating "a sense of winning" and allowing people to play longer and more smoothly as their money drops to zero. It was pretty chilling to read that the most recent "subtle yet radical innovation is precisely [new machines'] capacity to make losses appear to gamblers as wins, such that players experience the reinforcement of winning even as they steadily lose." Gamblers "collude in the delusion," turning off their rational knowledge as they play to what's known as "extinction." They play to play, not to win, seeking a zone of nonbeing/noninteraction with the human world.

Casinos then collect information about each player, tracking to make sure they're losing on target and offering coupons, meals, etc. at the moment that the gambler might decide to cut her losses and leave. Now technology allows this to be done in real time: customer reps carry devices that indicate when a consumer at one of the machines is reaching a pain point and needs a boost to keep playing. The casinos are removing the emotion and guesswork; the gamblers are living in it, creating a "profound imbalance" between the parties' abilities to know and understand each other, and change in response to the other's actions.

Schll situates this in the context of a modern economy that demands ever more surveillance and control of the self from each worker: "individuals must be extremely autonomous, highly rational, and ever-alert masters of themselves and their decisions; constant contingency management is the task." Gambling is both an escape from this constant choice-making and a retreat into it, distilling choice into something simple and smooth. Schll's player informants, mostly problem gamblers, repeatedly state that they don't want human contact; she suggests that gambling takes them away from painful demands and painful absences, reducing uncertainty if only to the certainty of loss.

When Schll turns to managing problem gamblers, she finds the same data-driven and choice-based dynamics. Both gambling therapies and casinos are "geared around the idea that behavior can be modified through external modulation; like gambling machines, therapeutic products are designed to be `user-centric' and amenable to custom tailoring." Moreover, both aim to provide a psychic state of balance that insulates people from shocks internal and external. Even consumer protection aims target consumer misperceptions, or target machines that are designed to exploit consumers' rational expectations. However, the machines aren't designed for rational appeal; she describes many of the strategies promoted by the industry as "like trying to talk sense into alcoholics who are passed out." The gambling industry is interested in consumer protection as a way to limit its potential legal liability/additional regulations; locating the "problem" in the gamblers is a way of claiming innocence of their own activities. So the industry advocates concentrating on helping specific people, rather than indirect behavior modification--when its economic foundation is indirect behavior modification, as noted above. Schll details nascent attempts to create responsible gaming devices that will slow play through "voluntary acts of self-governance," but it's hard to imagine they'll work if nothing else changes, especially since they rely on the same ideology of self-management--indeed, there's some evidence that addicted gamblers use self-monitoring as part of their addictive behavior. It's difficult to "appeal[] to personal responsibility through the very same machine interface that short-circuits personal responsibility in the first place," but it's part of a system that offloads risk and the duty to manage risk onto individuals.

Schll almost amusingly recounts how casinos started to worry that their careful data collection would be used against them, since they'd be able to see how much of their business came from problem gamblers or people exhibiting addictive behavior (extended play hours, multiple ATM visits, maxing out credit cards, etc.). Would they be liable for tracking players? Or for not doing so? Anonymizing data became a self-protective measure.

The final level of addiction is governmental: casino revenues are so attractive that governments find the temptation too hard to refuse. "Some have gone so far as to enumerate the classic defense mechanisms of addiction by which industry stakeholders, caught in the maximizing momentum of a drive for revenues, rationalize their actions: `blaming others, belittling contrary viewpoints, disavowing responsibility for negative outcomes, preferring to avoid conflict, and not tolerating straight talk, honesty, or directness.'" Schll is great at expanding focus from the individual gambler (where the industry wants us to look) to the larger structures interacting. Collective action and inaction got us here; the question is whether, going forward, the collective that does the shaping will be the corporation or the people.

excellent! well researched and written.
By A Customer
Cobble has written an invaluable history book about a large segment of the twentieth century workforce that would have otherwise been overlooked and forgotten. Waitresses have been ubiquitious and invisible at the same time. This book speaks to gender, class, ethnic, and work issues. It is written in a style that is informative AND interesting throughout. The historical research and organization of the book is superb. If you didn't know you were interested in this topic, the minute you start reading Cobble's book you will find out otherwise.

A highwayscribery "Book Report"
By Stephen Siciliano
Caution to flirts, cads, and ladies' men: "Dishing It Out," will change the way you look at waitresses for forever.

And if you think a book about waitressing falls into the hum-drum category, "Dishing It Out" demonstrates how a well-researched idea, presented with passion, can bring seemingly less-enticing topics to colorful life.

Sometimes, subjects can appear devoid of interest because of their very neglect and let us note how Microsoft Works Word Processor spell-check doesn't recognize the expression "waitressing."

But Dorothy Sue Cobble's book suggests that, to a certain degree, the rise and fall of waitress unionism traces our evolution (devolution?) as a country.

highwayscribery first came across Cobble through "Lost Ways of Unionism: Historical Perspective on Reinventing the Labor Movement," one in a larger collection of essays entitled "Rekindling the Movement: Labor's Quest for Relevance in the Twenty-First Century,", wherein she challenged the widely held view that skilled craft unions of the American Federation of Labor were less progressive than the Congress of Industrial Organizations' mass unions.

In her, "The Other Women's Movement: Workplace Justice and Social Rights in Modern America," Cobble posits that dominant feminist analysis passes over a generation of mid-century "labor women."

Picking up on a theme developed in that book, Cobble writes that, in contrast to the later wave of feminists, waitresses did not want to be treated the same as the boys, rather, "They wanted equality and special treatment and did not see the two as incompatible."

"Dishing it Out," kicks the can a little further down the path, by focusing on the specific craft.

"The craft of waitressing has always been, she writes, "one of the principal jobs for women, it was distinguished by certain characteristics that enabled female servers to formulate and sustain a culture of solidarity at the workplace. Most female food servers shared share a similar racial and ethnic background. The relative ethnic and racial homogeneity of waitresses fostered group cohesion as it has for other groups of workers, men and women. In addition, more than women in other occupations, waitresses lived outside a traditional family setting and hence turned quite readily to their workplace community for friendship and support. If young and single, they often chose to live apart from their families, frequently residing with other waitresses in small apartments or rented rooms. The high proportion who were divorced, separated, or widowed lived alone, with friends, or with dependent relatives or children. Unable to rely financially on their family of origin or on a husband, waitresses were often primarily self-supporting and attached to the work force in a permanent fashion."

Cobble fleshes out how these attributes lent themselves to a sorority-like adhesion that fostered unionization. The heyday of waitresses syndicates took root around the same time the larger movement took wings, back in the 1930s and '40s and the better part of this story takes place then.

She notes that, "The separation of workers by trade provided women with a space apart from male hostility and allowed the development of female perspectives and leadership."

The self-conducting nature of craft union locals allowed for "female autonomy" and were, generally speaking, "superior in sustaining female participation and leadership."

Rather than focus primarily on moving individual women into higher-paying jobs held by men, this generation of lady unionists opted for improvements in the jobs they traditionally called their own.

"Dishing It Out," details the restaurant industry's growth and is worthy of one's precious attention.

It comes as something of a revelation that the nation was not always strewn with "public" eateries and that a long march toward the "feminization of food service" brought us the hospitality model we're familiar with today.

Less surprisingly, early 20th century mores held waitressing to be an "improper trade," running counter to the reigning Victorian sensibilities as it did. The ladies, after all, interacted with males customers and labored where alcohol was served.

(!)

Discussion of the job's sexual component and its double-edged nature make for great reading and should deepen a reader's understanding of the person catering to their needs at "Hooters."

Not coincidentally, the craft was widely held to be rife with loose women and attitudes intimated a kinship with prostitution.

The ladies, with few options, rolled with it: "[Waitresses] acceptance of the sexual character of their work was rooted in their distinctive mores, but it also derived from their situation as service workers in an occupation in which their livelihood depended upon attractiveness and allure."

There was a kind of self-generating, autonomous effort to fight such perceptions by raising professional standards and forming unions were a way of gaining legitimacy.

"They spoke of their work as a skilled craft," says Cobble, "and they engaged in practices that have long been associated with craft unionism: organization along craft lines, emphasis on craft identity and specialization, restrictive membership rules, and union monitoring of performance standards."

As combative unionists, "waitresses could hurt business by suggesting the least expensive menu item, ignore the poor tippers, offer food and drink on the house, or simply provide lackluster, un-inspired service, even though it jeopardized their own tip income. Waitresses could also go out of their way to add that special attentive, anticipatory touch that would cement the customers patronage."

Which makes perfect (economic) sense.

The book dissects the unique and bygone arrangement whereby unions increased their members' value by cornering the labor market and parceling the work via hiring halls.

It turns out to not have been all bad for restaurateurs, "because culinary employers relied on the hiring hall for 'good and reliable' full-time workers as well as for the extras needed in emergencies"

The gals liked the hiring hall because "it gave them, rather than the employer, control over when and how much they worked. As long as they maintained their union standing, waitresses could quit a job and 'lay off' for however long they chose."

Lamentably, Cobble is obligated to tell her tale in the past-tense, waitressing unionism being more a study of history than a dissection of current events. The unions examined here were done-in by the same forces that have reduced organized labor's power globally.

But as either history or prescription for sound industrial relations, "Dishing It Out," sets the table beautifully.

Absolutely Worth It!
By Lauren
Dishing It Out captures the organizing achievements of waitresses throughout the twentieth century. It traces how their union work mirrored the larger labor movement in the nation over time. Cobble's book addresses the commercial food service and its transformation into a female occupation. The book describes the strategies waitresses in San Francisco and Chicago used for collective action and what equality and advancement meant to them. It also explores how waitress unionism changed over time and how this unique story reshaped the historical narrative of labor movements. Cobble argues that craft-style organizations were fundamental to the survival of waitress unions. Waitress's achievements and high level of confidence within their "skill" helped them gain a level of respectability unmatched in the 1930's. The feminist principles at the heart of waitress unionism were so strong they were capable of sustaining unions for over seventy years.
By 1941 San Francisco waitresses achieved almost complete organization of all locals within their trade and its union. Local fifty-eight was the largest waitress group in the country. San Francisco unionists represented the heightened power and creativity of labor unionists from the late 1930's into the 1950's. Cobble's work proved that during the war waitresses witnessed progressive changes in the labor force. Advancements included the six-day, eight-hour work week in the 1940`s. Aside from economic reforms, waitresses gained respect and elevated the status of servers. Though smaller cities and local towns often collaborated with larger city locals and unions out of necessity, they also made improvements and achieved success.
Waitress unions remained intact for nearly seventy years. Though the book celebrates their significant achievements, it could have rushed less through the decline of waitress unionism and further explained why it broke down during the late 1970`s in more detail. Still, the book's concise yet sophisticated language makes it an interesting read both for scholars and general readers intrigued by labor movements.
Through tables, figures, and a wide array of scholarly material, this book becomes an important read for historians examining the impact of labor unions within the twentieth century and demonstrates the exceptional nature of waitresses and their unions. Cobble began her exploration of the lives of working woman during the labor movement in her dissertation at Stanford University. This is where she furthered her study and heavily researched waitresses over time. There was no book-length study of waitresses up until her time, making Cobble's work the first to examine the history of waitresses as a specified group during the labor movement. Dishing It Out is an exceptional scholarly achievement that will not only be reviewed as an important source of information for waitresses, but a source necessary for understanding the power of the labor movements during the mid-twentieth century.

For Whom the Carol of the Bell Tolls, by Anthony J Bulnes

700 days. High school is just 700 days. That’s what they told us on our first day of freshman year. Four years filled with pep rallies, home comings, parent-teacher meetings and prom. We were promised 700 days of fun and education as we built unbreakable bonds with new and old friends. All leading to our eventual graduation. But, what they didn’t mention was how our entire foundation, our entire experience could be brought tumbling down in a matter of hours. They didn’t warn us or even expect that one event could shatter, destroy 700 days worth of memories. You probably remember high school as the most interesting or even the best four years of your life. But, when I think of high school, I can only remember one day. The darkest day. The day I had to watch my friends die.

About the Author
I'm just a young man that grew up in the Bronx with a dream of being more than just another face. I fell in love with writing back when I was just 6 years old. My cousins and siblings would always want toys, but I was more than happy with a notebook and a pen. Now it's been 20 years later and I am more than happy to say my stories can reach millions of others.

Review
“Jeanette's writing can best be described as bi-polar: one minute you're laughing at her comical observations on life and the next reeling with conviction from her spiritual lessons. But no need for psychotropic drugs. Just enjoy her wit and wisdom in this delightful, habit-forming book!”
James N. Watkins, award-winning author and humorist

"Jeanette's book is witty, wise, wacky and wonderful--a humorous look at lessons learned by a pastor's wife in a small town in Mid-America. You will laugh and learn as you read this book!"
Carole Ledbetter, Regional Speaker Trainer, Stonecroft Ministries

“God is everywhere. He’s present in the grand, curious and mundane moments of our lives -- in a disappointing bowl of noodles at a highly touted deli; at a wedding in which the organist is a no-show; at the gravesite of a father who died just when a young daughter needed him most. The vignettes in “Two Scoops of Grace with Chuckles on Top” represent snapshots of everyday life, and Jeanette Levellie reminds us the Lord’s grace and power can be found in each story. Her deft writing gave me reasons to laugh, think, and be grateful. This book is good for the heart.”
Mark Bennett, Columnist, Editorialist, and Features Writer, Terre Haute Tribune Star

A delightful inspirational book
By Camilla Quinn
Two Scoops of Grace with Chuckles on Top is a book of Biblical wisdom gently illustrated through lighthearted true stories that made me smile despite myself. The stories are gentle enough to read to a child at bedtime, yet profound enough to challenge the silver-haired churchgoer.

After reading a few of these stories, I became intrigued with following the challenges of the young pastor and his wife who moved from Los Angeles to rural Illinois. Jeanette is able to laugh at her own foibles, such as when she mistook a heifer for a bull and when she feared a crawdad would deliver a poisonous sting to her cats.

The dialogue within the stories is delightful and realistic. Jeanette's banter with her husband, Kevin, is so real that you will recognize it as conversation in your own home. The stories move quickly. Some of the events are as minor as a disappointing restaurant meal, while other events are as major as the death of Jeanette's father. They are, in their entirety, "everyman's story" and thus are relevant to anyone seeking a light-hearted book rooted in Biblical truths that energize the stories with longevity beyond the events that inspired them. Like Biblical parables, they stick to the roof of the mind until the storms of life wash them down and re-open their life-giving blooms.

If you want an insightful, humorous book for the doctor's office or the dentist's office, this is the book. If you want a dollop of comfort and spiritual inspiration to start your day, this is the book. If you want to feel your lips smiling across your stiff worry lines with that oh-so-good feeling of unexpected relief, you will not be disappointed, for you will smile despite your best efforts to hold tight to your trials. Jeanette has a way with words that surprise the most stoic reader. Her talented son, Ron, has added delightful drawings to enhance the stories.

If this book were a present, the wrapping paper would be whimsical and bright, the box would be truth, and the inside gift would be hope. It is truly a book worth owning and giving to others.

In her debut book, Jeanette Levellie uses her STRONG writer's voice to share pastor wife, West Coast, and Midwest stories. Never does Levellie sound "preachy." Rather, she pulls you onto the couch, whisper-giggles one anecdote, dries your tears after the next, always letting the Spirit appropriate a Biblical application.

"Scoop up" this wonderful book, "sprinkle" it liberally into the lives of your friends, your family, and those who may be searching for the Truth in a world void of "sweet"-ness. Don't forget to save a copy for YOU.

Review
'A valuable addition to the existing books on counselling skills, the greatest value of this book will be to new students of counselling, helping them to identify and practice the skills they are learning. However, its very easy, accessible style will make it a welcome addition to many a bookshelf'

"Sue Culley does a good job in providing a rationale for an approach in counselling that goes beyond the merely eclectic and shows how the skills she describes can be organized into what she calls a consistent and meaningful whole'. There are meticulous descriptions of the microskills of counselling, examples of the strategies that can be used when faced with particular issues within counselling relationships and discussion of the aims and goals of the counselling process... a very worthy and thorough book about counselling as an understandable and rational application of specific skills and the counselling process as a generally predictable sequence of events or stages... A worthwhile book, clear, concise, almost a How to do it' book (which will) appeal to those undertaking skills training or looking for a straightforward non-jargon approach' - "Self & Society

"really practical and will be helpful to many engaged in counselling at work. The skills and techniques are accompanied throughout by excellent case material' - "Insight

"

successfully presents a very clear, eclectic stage model of counselling, with each stage described in relation to a specific set of counsellor aims, strategies and skills... The book is short, readable, well-written, well-organized and very clear. The helping process is well-described in a practical and useful way. The framework instils confidence in the reader, and the basic skills are portrayed in concrete, meaningful, interesting and accessible ways. The reader is given clear guidance about what to do, as a basis for practising the skills to be learnt. The book has a great deal to offer the trainee counsellor and it is a valuable resource for thecounselling or psychotherapy tutor. It is also potentially very valuable to other professions, such as medicine, nursing or teaching, as a way of enhancing their communication skills' - "British Journal of Medical Psychology

"

can scarcely be bettered for discussion of foundation skills' - "British Book News

"

This excellent book describes a three-stage model of counselling compatible with similar models (Carkhuff, Egan, etc) but using simple, everyday language which allows the ideas and structures suggested to be readily accessible to many people... The section on questions is particularly useful - a difficult skill rarely so clearly explained... A valuable addition to the existing books on counselling skills, the greatest value of this book will be to new students of counselling, helping them to identify and practice the skills they are learning. However, its very easy, accessible style will make it a welcome addition to many a bookshelf' - "British Psychological Society Counselling Psychology Review

"Students and doctors alike need to be able to use listening/counselling skills in relating to patients. Culley provides an excellent basic introductory text outlining these skills, which can undoubtedly be both learnt and taught. A practical three stage approach to the counselling process is also described'" - British Medical Journal
